In the News (Wed 30 Dec 09)

SquareSound / Square Enix Music Online :: Kumi Tanioka :: Composer Information
Kumi Tanioka was born on August 29, 1974 in Hiroshima, Japan.
Tanioka was responsible for every single track, apart from "Eternal Oath," which was composed by Hidenori Iwasaki, who she worked with on Final Fantasy XI.
Tanioka's most recent role to date was participating in the live Star Onions concert during the Final Fantasy Chains of Promathia Special Night on 11 September, 2004.

RPGFan Soundtracks - Code Age Commanders OST
And, when I heard that Kumi Tanioka would be doing the soundtrack for the game, I couldn't have been more pleased.
However, even with the nice art, Tanioka's score is, unfortunately, a letdown for anyone expecting either the organic sounds of FF Crystal Chronicles or something more epic.
I was hoping that this would be the soundtrack where Tanioka proved herself as not just a competent composer (which she is) but as a great composer, along the ranks of Shimomura and Mitsuda.

The more Kumi Tanioka and Kenichiro Fukui are tested, the better, as both seem capable of creating original music in near-enough every genre.
I guess Tanioka will be the successor of Uematsu, it doesn't mean she must be responsible for FF numbering series continuously, but she can take a role like that Uematsu took in Square's game music.

Final Fantasy XI Original Soundtrack : SoundtrackCentral.com
The final battle music, "Awakening", is the only battle track Kumi Tanioka gets to do, and she does a splendid job of crafting a very dark, rhtyhmically pulsing battle motif.
In short, what we have in Final Fantasy XI OST is a collection of bland melodies, dull chord progressions, and aged tapestries of musical technique born of empty inspirations and conservative innovative freedom.
Keep in mind that the other two composers, Naoshi Mizuta and Kumi Tanioka, did more than 75 percent of the soundtrack, and many of the songs don't change their melody until you hit the middle half, and I personally found myself going to the next track before that happened.

Music was also a topic of her diploma, although she did not study music as her main topic.
Kumi Tanioka is a master at creating peaceful, slightly melancholic melodies with mostly classical instruments.
You'll rarely hear upbeat music from her - yet she is able to create a dangerous atmosphere or epic boss melodies.

Assisted by Naoshi Mizuta, who had scored Parasite Eve 2 in 2000, and Kumi Tanioka, who had written a decent number of tracks for Chocobo No Fushigina Dungeon 2 in 1999, Nobuo Uematsu continues to amaze his fans worldwide.
"Awakening" is the final boss theme, Kumi Tanioka takes care of it, and she delivers wonderfully, this has to be the best final battle theme so far in the series, with Decisive Battle and One Winged Angel not far behind.
Having heard the work of Kumi Tanioka and Naoshi Mizuta, I am sure that his successor(s) will be more than capable of continuing his legacy.

The controversial jump to the MMORPG genre for the latest installment of the Final Fantasy series has not only been proven a successful venture, but its even been heralded in the realm of original music.
Final Fantasy XI's world is brought to life by a collaboration of three of the more well-known known composers in the RPG business -- Naosha Mizuta, Kumi Tanioka, and Nobuo Uematsu all banded together to bring a score of majestically beautiful music for the online world of Final Fantasy XI's Vana'diel.
While Mizuta is reported as having written a good bulk of the music, Tanioka's talents are heard predominantly on the theme songs for the females of the Vana'diel races.

Kikizo Games: GameCube Review: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
The music captures the mood perfectly; the composer Kumi Tanioka used many folk instruments such as panpipes, Renaissance guitars, lutes and daf drums to reinforce the comfortable calming world but at a moments notice she manages to turn the music to suit a more sinister or exciting mood.
Sometimes though the music can become tiresome when you hear the one piece of music that is used for encounters over and over again but it doesn't do anything to dampen the production as a whole.
It's going to be interesting to see what Tanioka moves onto next as the Chocobo Dungeon composer is still fresh in the job and it's going to take a lot to reach the levels of respect some Square-Enix composers command.
