Kumyk (also Qumuq) is a Turkic language, spoken by about 200 thousands speakers (the Kumyks) in the Dagestan republic of Russian Federation.
Yırçı Qazaq (born 1839) is usually considered to be a founder of Kumyk literature.
Kumyk was written using Arabic script until 1928, Latin script was used in 1928-1938, and Cyrillic since then.

The Kumyk language includes elements of the languages of the Huns, Khazars and Kipchaks, who variously inhabited the region from the 4 - 12th centuries.
Because the new arrivals to the North Caucasus received a large portion of the Kumyk plains, land shortage among the indigenous Kumyks was widespread.
The introduction of mono-culture agriculture, the exploitation of the soil and deforestation all contributed to the present situation of economic and ecological crisis in the area.

 Caucasian Languages
The Kumyk people may well descend from the Khazars, Turkic speakers whose empire extended from the Volga to the Daghestan foothills, but the Kumyk language itself goes back to the Kipchak Turkic that began spreading into the North Caucasian steppe in the middle ages.
The indigenous languages of the Caucasus are known for their complex consonant systems (including ejectives and pharyngeals), complex morphology, and ergativity (identical case or other coding on subjects of intransitive verbs and direct objects of transitives; distinct coding on subjects of transitives).
At present and for all known history and known prehistory, languages with large numbers of speakers have both lowland and highland ranges and a generally elongate vertical distribution; these are economically advantageous and/or culturally prestigious languages that have spread uphill.

Among other prominent Daghestani shaikhs let us note the Kumyk Muhammad Amin of Paraul, who passed away in June 1999 and left as the successor Shaikh Muhammed-Mukhtar, who lives in Kyakhulay a settlement in the environments of Makhachkala.
He appointed Shaikh Abdulwahid (Abdullayev) from Khabshchi, an Avar with a good command of the Kumyk language,as his caliph (deputy) in the North Caucasus.The ceremony of appointing the caliph was recorded on video.
