Speakers are descendants of fishermen that inhabited the coast of Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea.
Despite the fact that it is spoken by the Persian Gulf fishermen, its phonology bears closer resemblance with the dialects of Persia (Fars) proper and is thought to be mutually understandable by the speakers of Luri.
The number of Kumzari speakers is estimated at less than 10,000 native speakers, although the members of the tribe number at ca.
Three more popular forms of Arabic are spoken, the most widespread being Omani Spoken Arabic, which is a mother tongue for around 720,000 people.
As well as these and other Semitic languages (including Jibbali), a few Indo-Iranian languages are used, namely Southern Baluchi, Western Farsi, Luwati, and Kumzari.
The national educational programme expanded rapidly during the 1970s and the 1980s; in 2000–2001 316,889 students attended primary schools while some 254,496 were enrolled at secondary schools.
HORMUZ - Introduction(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Situated at the north end of the Musandam peninsular the village of Kumzar is hemmed in by mountains but for centuries has maintained a seafaring presence in the area providing sailors for amongst others the Portuguese during the 16th century.
The Kumzari dialect is quite unique and has been studied by a few individuals, in particular Bertram Thomas.
There is an aerial view of the village which may take some time to upload and a commentary from Ruy Freyre, at the time the Portuguese were attempting to retake Hormuz and forts in the Musandam that they had lost to the Persians.
He estimates that for a good month he can clear as much as $10,000.
Kumzari said he still longed for the stability of a government job, but they were not hiring.
As he described his workday, which consists largely of supervising others for a few hours and making a few phone calls, he stopped, as if suddenly struck by a revelation.
The land mass of Kumzar which is sandwiched between the mountains and sea has a small isolated population (around 2000 people) with uniqueness of native language, their customs and their lifestyle in general.
The Kumzarilanguage is a hotchpotch of Arabic, Portuguese, Persian, Hindi and English.
Many Kumzari girls dream to become doctors, nurses and teachers and to play an active role in the development of their community.

Filling the mouth of a coastal wadi, the village is hemmed in by sheer cliffs.
These prospering fisher folk are proud of their unique Kumzarilanguage, a blend of Arabic and Farsi, and visitors are welcomed.
But there is so little spare land that the dead are buried beneath their houses.
At some stage, this vast, multi-layered cake of pink and orange limestone had collapsed, leaving the impression of fjords.
Musandam was also the last refuge of the Arabian leopard, cave-dwellers and a strange mongrel language called Kumzari, made up of Portuguese, Arabic and Persian.
Visiting the peninsula had only become possible in the past 10 years, and our hotel was so new the waiters hadn't yet worked out the corkscrew.
With its back to the mountain and looking out towards Iran — barely 50km ahead — Kumzar is a bit of a cultural oddity.
Its residents speak Kumzari, an Arabic dialect made up of Farsi, Portuguese and Hindi, hinting at influences from all sides of the sea.
Kumzar has so little breathing space between mountain and sea that its 3-5,000 residents share the dubious distinction of living in Oman’s most densely populated settlement.

Regarding the article about Women of Oman in The Ambassadors Magazine (http://ambassadors.net/archives/issue8/feature.htm) which mentions that "The Kumzarilanguage is a hotchpotch of Arabic, Portuguese, Persian, Hindi and English," I think it is being 1) belittling to the people of Musandam and 2) linguistically INCORRECT!
The classification--or lineage--of Kumzari is from Indo-European to Indo-Iranian to Iranian to Western Iranian to Southwestern Iranian to Luri to Kumzari.
The islands off the Oman coast, which the Arabs call Salama and her two daughters, the Portuguese re-named Quoins, because they looked like the coin (wedge) that was used to hold in place the cranked up guns on board a ship.
The Persian-Shihuh inhabitants of Kumzar, who inhabited these islands, called Great Quoin and Little Quoin as Mumar and Didamar, respectively, which meant “mother” and “daughter” islands in Kumzari.
Didamar had another name, Shanaku, in which ku was mountain and shana may have referred to a floating or swimming rock.
The policy considerations behind that decision were rather progressive, such as to bring Tajik closer to the achievements of developed
Western civilisation.

It's no fun just reading books like Robert Redford's character "Condor".
If it's action he's after, he should consider changing that Japanese to Farsi, Dari, Tajik, Luri, Bakhtiari, Kumzari, Kurdish, Baluchi, Pushto, Ossete, Caucusus, Yaghnobi, Old Persian, Avestanor, or even Chinese (Mandarin preferred over Cantonese).
Also, don't worry about the weapons training you have done with him.
