The lower reaches of the Kunar are wide and comparatively shallow, the river meandering in a multitude of channels through a broad and fairly open valley, well cultivated and fertile, with large flourishing villages and a mixed population of Mohmand and other tribes of Afghan origin.
The Kunar valley (Khoaspes in the classics) is the southern section of that great river system which reaches from the Hindu Kush to the Kabul river near Jalalabad, and which, under the names of Yarkhun, Chitral, Kashkar, andc., is more extensive than the Kabul basin itself.
The Kunar valley route to Chitral and to Kafiristan is being developed by Afghan engineering.

The former is spoken by the kal'aSa peoples in side valleys of the Chitral (Kunar) River in southern Chitral District of Pâkistân.
These stand perhaps as the last representatives of an earlier dialect group that may have extended from the confluence of the Pech and Kunar Rivers up into the Tregâm Valley in Pech and up to Nišagâm in the Kunar Valley.

The drainage of Bajour flows eastwards, starting from the eastern slopes of the dividing ridge which overlooks the Kunar and terminating in the Panjkora river, so that the district lies on a slope tilting gradually downwards from the Kunar ridge to the Panjkora.
To the south of Bajour is the wild mountain district of the Mohmands, a Pathan race.

From 20 to 30 miles up the river on its left bank, under the Bajour hills, are thick clusters of villages, amongst which are the ancient towns of Kunar and Pashat.
This is probably due to the late occupation of the valley by KafIrs, who spread eastwards into Bajour within comparatively recent historical times, and who still adhere to their fastnesses in the Kashmund hills.
There are no apparent relics of Buddhism in the Kunar, such as are common about Jalalabad or Chitral, or throughout Swat and Dir.

The Panjshir Valley is the headquarters of commander Ahmad Shah Massood who has used it as a base from which to launch attacks on the Taleban's control of Afghanistan.
At the end of July the Taleban launched a major offensive against the opposition stronghold in the Panjshir Valley, 90-kilometers north of the capital.
The opposition said Monday its forces had launched attacks on Taleban positions in Kunar, Laghman, and Nangarhar provinces.
