Topic: Kunark

  The Kunark Problem
Kunark was the first expansion shipped for Everquest.
Kunark is frequently pointed to and described as a major mistake.
Kunark is content weak assuming 100% consumption of that content.

 Rise of Kunark - EQ2-Daily.com EQ2 Wiki
Hundreds of New Quests – The tale of Kunark is told through hundreds of new quests, aimed at gameplay of all types: solo, group, and raid.
Before the release of the previous expansion Echoes of Faydwer, someone had found a similar trademark application for that title.
As it stands now, the trademark application was filed for the term Rise of Kunark which was one of the larger expansions within Everquest 1.

  Everquest: Ruins of Kunark Preview
According to the company, Kunark is a land just south of Faydwer that, through the centuries, had been forgotten.
Players will be able to reach Kunark by means of either teleportation, via a druid or wizard, or by one of the two boats.
Kunark appears to bring a lot of variety to the table when it comes to what you can hunt.

Everquest - The Ruins of Kunark
Besides providing a new race, a new continent, new creatures, thousands of new items and improved graphics, Kunark also allows players to build their characters up to level 60, and the addition of enormous new zones and more wandering monsters does a lot to alleviate the camping problem.
Some of the zones are insanely dangerous, and even players in the high 40s have found it impossible to retrieve their corpses from the hairier zones.
The polygon count is much higher, so Kunark doesn’t look nearly as sharp and blocky as many of the original EQ zones.

EverQuest: Ruins of Kunark Review for PC - Gaming Age
The textures for the most part are your standard fare, most of the nicer textures being on the newly formed island of Kunark, which is where this expansion pack comes into play.
Kunark and its inhabitants are completely new to the EverQuest universe, which has been a living, breathing thing for a long time now.
As an expansion pack Ruins of Kunark does a pretty solid job, but it’s a shame the graphical improvements made to this new island were not shared with the rest of the EverQuest world.

Review - Everquest : Ruins Of Kunark // PC /// Eurogamer
The "Ruins Of Kunark" expansion pack was released to stem the tide of bored players that were leaving the game, and it seemed to do the trick.
Compare this to zones such as Lesser Faydark and Nektulous Forest on the old northern continent, which showed the graphic artists to be suffering from something of a burnout, with the same landscape used throughout, scant scenery, and an overall lack of imagination.
Noticeable slowdowns are present in almost all of the Kunark zones that I have explored.

Everquest: Ruins of Kunark by Al Giovetti
Everquest and its newest iteration Kunark are the latest in the highly addicting massively multiplayer role playing games that are making mediocre game companies rich with $10 per month subscription fees.
Kunark play is based upon the philosophy that you must be placed in utterly impossible situations with strangers in an effort to survive.
Ruins of Kunark graphics are better than the prior game, but they are far to busy and too detailed.

EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark for PC Review - PC EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark Review
As you explore the new continent of Kunark, it'll become increasingly clear to you that the expansion's value is as immense as that of the original game.
Kunark's many indigenous life-forms look outstanding by EverQuest's own high standards, or by any others: From conventional creatures like rhinos and scorpions, to stranger beings like the draconian Sarnak and the ravenous nibblers, the sheer variety of Kunark's dozens of new monsters is certainly the best thing about them.
And Kunark introduces a great many interesting and powerful artifacts into the world of EverQuest - Verant claims the total number of new objects is in the thousands - and many of these can only be wielded by the Iksar.

 Everquest: Ruins of Kunark
Ruins of Kunark’s new zones (in Kunark, of course) use a slightly updated graphics set that includes such eye-candy as swaying palm trees and….er, more swaying trees.
The sound effects for many of the creatures of the Kunark continent, and even of the Iksar race, was buggered up at launch and not fixed for nearly a month.
Not once throughout all of Kunark was I impressed with a sound made by a creature.

Everquest: The Scars of Velious Review by Al Giovetti
Kunark won kudos for access to monsters, large sized zones, and greatly improved graphics.
Kunark adds many new races of monsters to kill including three new cities with races in those cities: Velious Dragons of Skyfire, Coldain Dwarves of Thurgardin, and Frost Giants of Drakkel.
Kunark is prettier still with more detail and interesting graphics to support the interesting plotline.

It is interesting then that almost two years later with the advent of epic weapons that some of the epic quests began to finally uncover the stories behind each of these lost dungeons, which themselves weren't ever lost, they were just placed as scenic add-ons in several old world zones.
Kunark provided a journal scribed by a bard of Rallos Zek who was listening to a learned Iksar's view and history of Norrath and his people.
Similarly to Kunark's lore, players could simply open up the Velious manual and have the outline of Velious's lore explained to them in a series of letters intercepted from agents sent to give their takes on Velious.

In terms of the game, The Ruins of Kunark had a very different visual feel compared to the original EverQuest">zones in EverQuest: the color palette was more vibrant and many of the models used for the monsters were more detailed.
The Kunark expansion also increased the maximum level a character could attain from 50 to 60, and introduced a substantial number of new and powerful monsters for characters above level 50 to fight.
The Ruins of Kunark was also the focus of 'epic quests', or quests for powerful weapons for each character class, which were introduced between the Kunark and Velious expansions as a source of further high-end content.

GameOver - EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark (c) Verant Interactive
EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark is a welcome change to that theory by not only adding on to the previous experience, but by actually improving it.
The Ruins are far from a walk in the park, although it does feature many areas that will allow lower-experienced adventurers to gain the experience and items necessary to further their quests.
Combine that with the addition of a new race, a new continent, the change from level 50 to level 60 characters, new items, spells and creatures and you've basically got a fantastic addition that is a must for EverQuest adventurers.

Kunark Zones -- EverQuest: The Serpent's Spine Vault
The continent of Kunark was introduced in "The Ruins of Kunark" expansion in March 2000.
Following that, the tribes of Iksar were forced to survive in the wilds of Kunark for many years while they gathered their strengths.
Their society thinks as one, and is beginning to take on their ancient enemies in the surrounding lands, fighting the goblins, sarnak, and frogloks to reclaim the swamp over which they had ruled.

RPG Expert - EverQuest - Wayfarer's Guide to Kunark   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Kunark and the Old World are the focus of all the Kunark Class Epic and Iksar Class Epic quests, except for Beastlords (whose Class Epic extends to Luclin) and Berzerkers, whose Class Epic takes them, presumably, all over the previous expansions and into Gates of Discord.
At first, the unquestioned rulers of the continent of Kunark were the Shissar, a race of snake-men who were, at that time, powerful masters of magic, and ruled Kunark with an iron fist.
The monsters here are the typical Kunark mix of skeletal and ghostly Sarnak, live "gnashers," and "enthralled" humanoid creatures of various sorts, including goblins, sarnak, and PC races such as halflings and elves.

GameOgre.com's EverQuest: Ruins of Kunark Tips
Kunark can be dangerous, even to level 50s.
Druids and others who use wolf form will now be killed by city guards when they are shape-changed into wolves, so remove this spell when you get close to a city.
Evil races (trolls, ogres, and dark elves) are attacked by the Iksar guards, so jump off the ship and swim to a safe spot when you travel to Kunark, or look for someone to teleport you.
