Kunashir Island (Кунашир (Kunashir) in Russian, 国後島:Kunashiri in Japanese, Black Island in Ainu language) is the southernmost island in the Kuril chain in Russia's Sakhalin Oblast.
The island is formed with the volcanic and crystalline rocks.
The island has a port next to the village of Yuzhno-Kurilsk, district seat of the South Kurile district and the island's main settlement.

The Kuril Island conflict is a dispute between Japan and Russia over sovereignty over the most southern four of the uninhabited Kuril Islands.
The disputed islands are currently under under Russian administration as part of the Sakhalin Oblast but are also claimed by Japan which refers to them as the Northern Territories (北方領土) or Southern Chishima (南千島).
The whole of Etorofu shall belong to Japan; and the Kurile Islands, lying to the north of and including Uruppu, shall belong to Russia." Note that Kunashiri, Shikotan and Habomais Islands are not explicitly mentioned in the treaty.

These two islands had not historically been listed as part of the Kuril chain, and were not covered by the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty according to which, under the Russian interpretation, Japan agreed to the loss of the two northern islands of Kunashiri and Etorofu.
Russians from the islands can now visit Hokkaido without a visa, and some Japanese have been allowed to travel to the islands to visit their ancestors' graves.
The islands are rich in fish and seaweed, but these are businesses that can turn a tidy profit irrespective of who owns the islands.
