One of the unique corners of Prikamye - Kungur - is the third oldest city in the Urals.
In contrast to other Ural settlements Kungur was eager to keep that charm of ancient Russian towns which helps to dip into the past XIX century and even to XVIII century.
And architects who were invited from the Central Russia made Kungur one of the most beautiful towns of the country and combined in its architecture empire, baroque and modern style.

Kungur Ice Cave is located in the vicinity of the ancient town of Kungur, 100km to the south-east of Perm city.
At the very beginning of the 18th century it was believed that Kungur Ice Cave was formed in the process of sulphate rock solution by subsurface water.
In the 18-19th centuries Kungur was known as one of the major centers of copper-smelting industry in the Urals.

We only had short stays in both places; we headed to Suzdal in search of a quiet few days before setting off on the Trans-Sib.
Kungur, about 2 hours along the trans sib from Perm, is an even smaller town with no real attaction other than some famous "Ice Caves".
Once we had finished in Kungur / Perm (somehow managed to miss the Gulag memorial grrrrr) it was straight on to Irkutsk and Lake Baikal!!!

The Kungur ice cave became a candidate for World Heritage status at a UNESCO forum in November of 2004.
The world's sixth largest karst cave, it stretches underground for 5,600 meters and has some 60 lakes and 60 grottos.
