The Arka Tagh is in the centre of the Kunlun Shan with Ulugh Muztagh (6973 m).
The highest mountain of the Kunlun Shan is the so-called "Kunlun Goddess" (7167) in the Keriya area.
The mountain range formed at the northern edges of the Indian Plate during its collision, in the late Triassic, with the Eurasian Plate, which resulted in the closing of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean.

Kunlun Shan (or Kunlun/Kun-Lun) is a major mountain system of Asia, located along the north edge of the vast dry Tibetan plains in China about halfway between the Himalayas in the south and Tien Shan in the north.
The range is naturally bordered by Kyzyl-Su and Surkhob river valleys in the north, Sarykol ridge on the border between China and Tajikistan in the east, Pamir and Pyandzh rivers in the south and Pyandzh river and Western spurs of the Darvaz and Peter the First ridges on the west.
On the West Pamir borders on Hindu Kush, on the south on Karakoram and Himalaya and on the east of Pamier lies Kunlun Shan and on the North-East Tien Shan.

The Kunlun, a prominent mountain range of Central Asia, extends 2,500 km from east to west, connecting western Sichuan with the Pamir Range and forming the northern rim of the Tibetan Plateau.
Because the Kunlun and adjacent regions of Tibet have been uplifted recently (3,000 m in the past two million years), the high alpine environments here are geologically young and lack species that are deeply endemic.
This ecoregion is comparable to the Kunlun Mountains biogeographic subunit in the Tibetan Plateau according to Mackinnon et al.

First, the range coincides with a major tectonic boundary: the Taaxi-Qiaoertianshan-Hongshanhu (TQH) suture between the Qiangtang block to the south and the Songpan-Ganzi subduction-accretion complex to the north.
In the Loqzung range, the TQH suture juxtaposes Jurassic mélange and late Paleozoic diamictites of Gondwanian affinity to the south against Carboniferous strata to the north that have previously been reported to show Cathaysian affinity.
Specifically, the structural style in the SE portion of the range is characterized by tightly folded Cretaceous deposits whereas to the NW these units are deformed by broad, upright folds.

This group of mountains is the Westernmost of the Kunlun Shan, Stretching from the famous Karakoram Higway in the South to the China-Tadjikstan border in the Northwest.
Although most of the ranges that can be found there have something to do, in their formation processes, with the collision of the Indian subcontinent with Eurasia, the timespan in which this happened and the details of the geological processes that led to the uplifting differ a lot.
The two remaining ranges of Central Asia, the Altay and the Tien Shan are found much more to the North and the processes that led to their formation are highly different to what was discussed here and their birth and evolution is a bit outside of what is of importance over here.

The region is still volcanically active; basaltic volcanism has occurred in the last 10 million years in the area and eight alkali basalt volcanoes ranging in age from approximately 1 million to 80,000 years have erupted within 50 km of the proposed repository.

According to the Shanhaijing ("Classic of Mountains and Seas"), the distance from the Kunlun to the Jishi Mountain is 1,740 leagues, and from the place where the river comes from Mt. Jishi in Longxi Commandery down to River Luo in the plain land, more than 5,000 leagues are measured.
The way to Mount Kunlun is far and difficult, the reports are confuse and accidently; there are only few waterways and streets, and even these few run in different places; only few people have seen or even heard from these places, and nobody has made further investigations.
Commentary: The Shanhaijng says, the Kunlun Range is in the northwest, and the Yellow River comes from the northeastern corner of it.
