Iwate faces the Pacific Ocean to the east, and borders Aomori Prefecture on the north, Akita Prefecture on the west, and Miyagi Prefecture on the south.
On September 1, 2005 the towns of Ashiro and Nishine and the village of Matsuo from Iwate District merged, forming the city of Hachimantai.
On March 6, 2006 the village of Yamagata from Kunohe District merged with the old city of Kuji to form the new city of Kuji.

The revolt of Masazane Kunohe was fought in the Kunoe Castle in the nineteenth year of Tensho, which was sparked by Hideyoshi's intervention in the conflict of the Nambu family that was ruling northern Iwate.
The northern half of Iwate belonged to the Morioka clan controlled by the Nambu family, and the southern half belonged to the Sendai clan controlled by the Date family.
Iwate was devastated after the Second World War owing to the deforestation and various disasters, but the government set the "Multipurpose Land Development Law" to pursue the reconstruction of its land, to stabilize and improve life of its people.

IWATE 2005-06 GROUP A JETs (minus Paul and maybe a couple others...I think they were taking the picture) :
This weekend...a big birthday bash for a couple of JETs from southern Iwate that will be held in Morioka.
While not a metropolis by ANY means, the southern portion of Iwate is a little more populated, less mountainy, and easily accessible, which makes it easier for people in the south to hang out (unless you live on the coast, in which you are screwed in north AND the south).
