		In the absence of a female precedent to follow, Barrett Browning followed her own rules in assembling her verse-novel.

		The poem's Romantic focus on the subjectivity of the narrator hasled to its being called a feminist version of William Wordsworth's autobiographical poemThe Prelude.

		The kunstlerroman tradition of the development of the artist, conveyed through the present-day sequences showing Spiegelman dealing with his creative anxieties as he makes the story;
		Blume quotes Todd Gitlin that "Maus [is] the primary example of postmodernism still engaged with ethical concerns." That it is postmodern emerges both in its blending of genres and in elements of metafiction (or, since it is not fiction, meta-narrative).
		The tale of how this tale comes to be told, the metanarrative, is one of the three narrative genres that Tabachnick identifies (above) coexisting in Maus: i.e., the kunstlerroman or story of the artist's development.

		Her major work, Aurora Leigh, has been considered the first feminist Kunstlerroman.
		Domestic realism is the genre of nineteenth-century novels written mainly for and by middle-class women about the realities of daily life for women of their own class and the working classes.
		Despite the fact that Last Poems celebrate the subjectivity of their central characters, thematically Barrett Browning's late poems also resemble novels of domestic realism by Mary Wollstonecraft, Maria Edgeworth, George Eliot, Harriet Martineau, and George Sand.

		With the many recent individual studies reconfiguring the relationship between Gothic and Romantic writers, a book length study on the subject seems long overdue, and Michael Gamer's fine study addresses this need while it reflects upon and organizes those reassessments.
		Older studies often narrated a Kunstlerroman in which a Romantic poet, for example Wordsworth or Shelley, dabbled with gothic tropes in his youthful writing but outgrew them as he embarked upon his mature career.
		Or those studies focused on how a Romantic writer, say Coleridge, might borrow from the literature of terror but transform and elevate its materials.
