 What is Kuntao?
Kuntao is one of a number of martial arts styles found in Indonesia and Malaysia, coastal Thailand and the Western Philippines, including pukulan, silat, and pencak (these latter two generally being treated together as 'Pencak-Silat in contemporary parlance).
However, the term Kuntao is not really equivalent to saying 'Kung Fu' or 'Wu Shu' (Chinese terms for martial arts) for in many cases Kuntao arts from Southeast Asia have diverged from their Chinese origins far enough to be considered distinct arts in their own rights.
The term Kuntao is in fact a loan-word used in the Austronesian language variants common to Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Eastern Thailand and the Philippines to refer to martial arts, sometimes, but not always, of Chinese origin.

 Kuntao is not Self-defense
Therefore, the name "kuntao" in its broader albeit mistaken, meaning of self-defense became common also in Indonesia and it was soon used as synonym for silat.
The dismissal of the term "kuntao" for both political and cultural reasons is clearly reflected by the fact that also perguruan that use "kuntao" techniques are not willing to admit it formally.
This dominance of kuntao techniques is not surprising since the Master of Perisai Diri, R.M. Soebandiman Dirdjoatmodjo trained with the Kuntao teacher, or Suhu, Yap Kie San in Parakan, Banyumas Regency for 14 years after studying many other silat and pencak forms.

I have seen a number of silat and kuntao groups that have had the virtue of continuous exposure to excellent teachers and in which few, usually none, ever pick the biomechanical subtleties of what is sometimes called the 'kinesthetic' or 'body-culture' essence of those arts.
In addition, to look in that film and video for aspects and attributes that you need to develop to ensure that your performance of silat or kuntao really is true to the way those in the art are supposed to move.
Readers familiar with my discussions of the idea of kuntao (Journal of Asian Martial Arts IX:2 (2000), Kung Fu Qi Gong July-August 2001) will recall that in some contexts 'kuntao' is equivalent to kung fu, but for the most part it refers to silat-kung fu hybrid systems.
