According to the modern calendar, Ivan Kupala Day is celebrated on 7 July, but the festivities start during the night, from 6-7 July.
These fires, prepared by rubbing wood together, were named “living fire.” The fire was the symbolic representation of the sun’s power and the ritual worship based on the increasing reproductive activity of both humans and Nature (fertility of the land and fruiting of the trees).
Many spooky tales and legends are connected with Kupala Night, tales concerning witches, good and bad omens, spirits of the forests and rivers, and snakes.

 Site of the President of the Republic of Belarus/Theatres
The National Academic Yanka Kupala Theatre, the oldest theatre of Belarus, was opened on 14 September 1920.
At the start besides the Belarusian troupe the theatre included also the Russian and the Jewish companies which later became independent, as well as chorus, ballet and symphony orchestra which in 1933 formed the basis of the National Opera Theatre.
The theatre’s company is viewed as one of the best in the USSR and is honoured with the name of the great Belarusian poet and dramatist Yanka Kupala (1944).
