The Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), under the leadership of Mullah Mustalafa-al-Barzani, formed in 1946 inside the Soviet occupied land in Northern Iran.
The arrest of a negotiating team from the KDP in June 1963 and the commencement military campaigns against the KDP forces by the Iraqi army validated these views.
A failed assassination attempt of KDP leader General Mullah Mustafa Barzani, blamed first on the PUK but later found to be the work of the Baghdad regime, caused the plans for a Kurdish state to deteriorate rapidly.

Party spokesman Abu al-Harith Azzam told Baghdad's "Al-Shira" in an interview published on 10 February 2004 that his group did not register (to date, groups are not required to do so) as a political party, and has no intention of doing so.
The party is open to any Islamic sect, and any ethnicity, Azzam said, adding, "Being a Muslim is enough to accept him as a member in the party." The group's membership is unknown, but is thought to be negligible.
It worked with the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party in December 2000 to try to negotiate an end to fighting between the Kurdistan Workers' Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

In a TV report on 26 March, I saw troops of the Kurdish KDP party with a flag similar to the one we have (below) as the KDP flag, but with a red disk instead of the blue disk; the disk was considerably smaller than in our image.
The caption in Yahoo reads: "Iraqi Kurdish militia fighters raise a KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) flag in the Qushtapa area, 50 kms (30 miles) south of the Kurdish-controlled town of Irbil." The flag is yellow with a red disk with a stylized sigla PDK within.
After the disastrous defeat of the Iraqi Kurds in 1975, Jalal Talabani split from the KDP and founded the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), whose base is primarily urban intellectuals.
