The Hiroshima garrison was established in 1873 to govern Western Japan as one of five Army districts and manned with the 11th Infantry Regiment.
In 1886 the Hiroshima garrison was expanded to the Fifth Division.

Kure, which had been selected as the site of the first headquarters of B.C.O.F. in Japan, is situated on the southern coast of the island of Honshu on the Inland Sea.
The BCOF area of responsibility was the western prefectures of Shimani, Yamaguchi, Tottori, Okayama, Hiroshima and Shikoku Island.
BCOF headquarters were located at Kure, the army was encamped at Hiro, the RAAF at Iwakuni, and the naval shore establishment at the former Japanese naval base at Kure.

Kure's Yamato Museum (大和ミュージアム) is said to be a tribute to the skills and science of area workers that created such marvels as the Yamato.
Amusingly, the display pictures of Kure transportation projects includes a picture of the Akinada Bridge from Kawajiri to Shimokamagari.
Despite the current lack of good pamphlets and explanation in anything but Japanese, if you're interested in the history of the Japanese military and their ships then this is probably one of the best museums in Japan (certainly the best in western Honshu) to learn about it and see some excellent models.

Kure is a famous naval base and perhaps the Marine Self-defence Force has a dojo, but I doubt whether it is open to the general public.
