Kurt Atterberg - Biography and Partial Works List
Atterberg was a founder member of the Society of Swedish Composers, serving as its Chairman between 1924 and 1943 and becoming Honorary Chairman in 1947.
Atterberg's musical strength ranges from clear and brightly melodious compositions on a small scale to grandly conceived symphonic works.
Despite the limitations imposed by the form, the interaction of the solo violin and viola with the orchestra is permeated by that affectionate sense of melody which is such a beautiful quality of Atterberg's artistry.

Kurt Magnus Atterberg (December 12, 1887 February 15, 1974) was a Swedish composer.
The symphony was recorded by Sir Thomas Beecham, and Atterberg later recorded it himself.

Watches-Kurt Atterberg- Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Atterberg's work is as personal as, say, Myaskovsky's and Bax's, and to a large extent, Nielsen's.
The finale of Atterberg's is very such like that of Myaskovsky's, incidentally, with the mood somewhat uplifting and deviant, though there are places, especially @4'09' and towards the end, where the sombre mood of the lento movement reappears.
But Atterberg compensates that with the troubled poignancy of the previous movements at the finishing bars of the work, with the atmosphere very glooming and elegiac in outlook.

To my mind, Atterberg's First Symphony in B minor (1910), written when he was just under 24 years of age, is the most impressive premiere symphony written by a Swedish composer (especially of his generation).
Atterberg was among the more successful of Scandinavian composers and with good reasons.
Kurt Atterberg, for me it is one of the really interesting new releases of hardly known or unknown composer from wherever.

Kurt Atterberg (1887-1974; pronounced 'Atterberry,' I'm told) was an unabashed Romantic who was still composing post-Straussian symphonies as late as these two from the 1940s.
Atterberg seems to have gotten lost in the crowd, although now there are recordings of these symphonies here on cpo and on Sterling, the latter with the Malmö Symphony under Michail Jurowski.
Atterberg was not a Stenhammar or a Nielsen or even a Sibelius in terms of composing music with sustained originality, inspiration, and clarity in the music making.

Kurt Atterberg: Symphony No. 9 "Visionaria"; Symphonic Poem "Älven" Review and price   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Atterberg had in mind to do it differently from Rosenberg: "Sinfonia Visionaria" avoids the near-hysteria of the other artist's mode in favor of a quieter, rather more mystical contemplation of man's inhumanity to man in an age of world wars and atomic weapons.
Atterberg's piece is not as hedonistic as Orff's Carmina Burana; although the first part of the former is as celebratory of Mother Earth as the Primo Vere section in Orff's, but with greater arresting subtlety.
Atterberg's tone poem is as skillfully written and the 'The Great Lake' movement in particular holds magic and wonder (as does the 'Waterfall').

The curiosity and the pioneer of the works of Kurt Atterberg (1887-1974) came relatively late in comparison to his near Swedish contemporaries, like Peterson-Berger, Rangstrom, Allan Pettersson, Alfven, and Stenhammar.
Atterberg shares with Bax (and even Tubin, Strauss, and Vaughn-Williams) the ability for imaginative and compelling orchestration, and the ability to evoke the picturesque quality of his music making to high effectiveness.
They are highly inventive and vital, and Atterberg's constant use of Swedish folkmusic added further dimensions and facets to his music.

The opening Allegro con fuoco movement is heroic and restless - it seems to speak of patriotic fervour and of elemental turbulence.

Listening to Kurt Atterberg's symphonies together in sequence (the collection was previously released on five separate discs--type Q1958, Q5032, Q2147, Q3148, and Q6782 in Search Reviews) you're certain to be impressed by the composer's consistently imaginative melodic invention and powerfully effective orchestration.
While Atterberg doesn't possess the sort of stunning, out-of-nowhere originality of Sibelius (whose music at times Atterberg's resembles), he does make marvelous use of already existing techniques to construct some brilliant, evocative, and always highly enjoyable works.
All nine symphonies (as well as the symphonic poem Alven) feature vivid orchestral writing (the Ninth showcases Atterberg's considerable skill in handling large choral forces), as well as Atterberg's penchant for building perfectly-timed, irresistibly exciting climaxes.

The Third Symphony, really a sequence of three tone poems, has a thrilling second movement "storm" that sounds just like a film score to some high-octane disaster epic, and Ari Rasilainen plays the living daylights out of it, as he does both symphonies in general.
His swift tempos and generous exploitation of dynamic extremes give the Sixth Symphony (sometimes nicknamed the "Dollar" Symphony because it won Atterberg a handsome international competition prize, and thus all that early recorded attention) a sharper profile than in the competing BIS version, with the finale's abortive fugal efforts coming off funnier than ever.
