Topic: Kurt Schaffenberger

Mike's Amazing World of DC Comics
Schaffenberger is perhaps best known for his work on Lois Lane is the 1960s.
Kurt's work on Lois Lane and other Superman titles of the Silver Age, along with artist Curt Swan, helped to set an artistic vision for the character which became immediately identifiable and loved.
Kurt will be missed, but he will always live on, every time I read one of those crazy Lois Lane stories from the 60's.

Kurt Schaffenberger (1920-2001) - SFWA News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Schaffenberger had the perhaps unique distinction of being a key "second string" artist for both members of one of comics' classic rivalries.
For most of his career, Schaffenberger pencilled and inked his own work, but he also inked other artists (most notably, fellow Superman artist Curt Swan and Don Newton) and also was inked by others (Dave Hunt, for example).
Schaffenberger's relationship with DC was not always a good one; he was the one artist in a "writer's revolt" of the 1960s, when key creative personnel sought benefits from management and were dischargered for their efforts.

As a prolific comic book artist beginning in the early 1940s, Kurt Schaffenberger illustrated the adventures of Captain Marvel, Superman and Lois Lane.
But Schaffenberger believed that DC flballed him for two years in the '70s, for trying to form a union for artists and writers.
Schaffenberger's lighthearted style is a far cry from the so-called "dark style" that has been prevalent in comic books for the last 15 or so years.

Schaffenberger was also instrumental in DC Comics revival of "Captain Marvel" in the 70s.

Kurt Schaffenberger was an old-school "hack" who did work for numerous titles through his long career.
The reason I mentioned his passing at all is because I absolutely love his Lois Lane comics, the work he's best known for.
His work, and others of the same period, were paid homage to in Flex Mentallo, in the part where the many transformation of Flex are shown.

It’s a fan’s dream come true, but for me it has special resonance: Vogel put together my two obsessions for the first time in print, and like a big hit to the head, I realized why I love the wacky Lucy and the impetuous Lois.
And although it doesn’t make me any less inclined to obsess about Lucy or Lois, or Kurt’s art, for that matter, I found it amusing that a total stranger would finally put it together for me.
Except (unfortunately) Kurt never drew Lucy, as far as I know.

In fact, Kurt Schaffenberger was one of the most distinctive and memorable artists of DC's Silver Age.
There were no credits in most DC books back then, but Schaffenberger's style was unmistakable: the beauty of his women and the handsomeness of his men; the three-dimensional realism he gave the figures he drew; his range and sensitivity in depicting emotions, so appropriate to Lois's comics.
Swan and Schaffenberger could each handle darkness and even tragedy in their work: think of Swan's "The Death of Superman" and Schaffenberger's "The Three Wives of Superman," both from the Silver Age.

Kurt Schaffenberger deserved a lot more recognition than he ever got.
Unfortunately for us kids grabbing up copies of the tiny American Comics Group's offerings off the racks, Kurt's contributions were limited almost exclusively to the line's covers, the bulk of his output being published by the obviously more financially rewarding DC Comics.
And all the while, while providing the requisite slam-bang slugfest the assignment called for, Schaffenberger never lost the twinkle in his art.

Oddly enough, although the series' definitive artist, the wonderfully meticulous Kurt Schaffenberger, certainly had an appealing flair for this sort of material, it's apparent that Weisinger and his writers weren't nearly as simpatico with the female perspective.
In fact, based on many of the Oddball stories in SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND, LOIS LANE, these guys were downright misogynistic, and this issue is chock-full of astonishing examples of their openly hostile attitude toward women.
The story opens with a splash-panel that depicts Lois as an Alpine mountain-climber, about to clamber onto a rock engraved with Kurt Schaffenberger's distinctive signature, accompanied by text that openly acknowledges many of the story devices regularly employed by Weisinger's writers::

We met in the mid-1990s while we were working at Computer Shopper magazine, and one day we realized that we both had fond childhood memories of Lois Lane comic books drawn by artist Kurt Schaffenberger.
Before Kurt's death, we were also lucky enough to meet the artist and buy some pages directly from him, at a comic convention in New Jersey a few years ago.
We're collaborating on a fun new series of books called TV Tidbits, and I've edited his three Lucille Ball books, Lucy A to Z, Lucy in Print, and the Lucille Ball Trivia Quiz.
