Kurt Schumacher (1895-1952) was the leading German socialist statesman during the period of recovery and reconstruction following World War II.
Active at first as a journalist and politician in the state of Württemberg, Schumacher was elected to the Reichstag in 1930.
The concept of a socialist Germany in which the rights of property are subordinated to society's collective welfare is still central to the program of the Social Democratic Party, and the longing for the union of all Germans--those in the German Democratic Republic in the East with those in the German Federal Republic--remains undiminished.

Germany: Social Democratic Party loses another chairman
Matthias Platzeck, who was elected last November at the Karlsruhe party congress with 99.4 percent of the vote, announced his resignation last week and revealed the name of his successor, the state premier of Rhineland Palatinate, Kurt Beck.
In the final analysis, the enormous tensions within the SPD which tested Platzeck’s nerves are a result of the political decline of a party that has been moving continuously to the right, has lost nearly a third of its members since 1991, and has barely won any elections in recent years.
The 57 year-old Kurt Beck is qualified to replace Platzeck above all because he is the only remaining social democratic premier in a substantial West German state.

A huge, brooding portrait of the late Kurt Schumacher looked down last week from the speaker's stand on the convention of West Germany's Social Democratic Party at Dortmund.
In the keynote address, Schumacher's chief deputy, Erich Ollenhauer, repeated Schumacher's old neins: the Socialists still stood against a peace treaty with the Western powers, against the Schunian Plan, against anything that took precedence over the re-unification of West and East Germany.
Pudgy, bespectacled, pipe-smoking Ollenhauer has little of Schumacher's tigerish fire, but he is just as stubborn.
