Topic: Kurt Wolfe

In the News (Mon 4 Jun 12)

  We told you so...10 years ago  | Q & A | Advocate.com
By the time journalist Kurt Wolfe was being cited by The Advocate for a now-infamous article about the congressional closet in summer 1996, he had already outed congressmen Mark Foley and Jim Kolbe on a New York City radio station, then on a cable-access television show he produced titled Out in New England.
Using Wolfe as one of several credible sources, The Advocate contacted Kolbe and Foley, asking about their sexual orientation.
Wolfe, 56, is now a freelance reporter in Georgia.

Wolfe sharpens his skewers and goes after modern day college life in his latest novel, filled with classic Wolfe-isms including the seamless presentation of up-to-the-minute lingo and timely pop culture details (the band of the moment in the novel is "Swarm").
Wolfe's now-classic first novel created a stir when it was released for its funny, searing depiction of the '80s go-go financial atmosphere and the Masters of the Universe who perpetuated it.
Wolfe's exciting account of the rocket airplane experiments of the post-World War II era and the early space program won the National Book Award and was eventually made into the successful 1983 movie starring Ed Harris and Sam Shepard.

Sachs-Wolfe effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sachs-Wolfe effect, named after Rainer Kurt Sachs and Arthur Michael Wolfe, is a property of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), in which photons from the CMB are gravitational redshifted, causing the CMB spectrum to appear uneven.
The second, sometimes called the 'late-time integrated Sachs Wolfe effect', arises much later as the evolution starts to feel the effect of the cosmological constant (or, more generally, dark energy), or curvature of the Universe if it is not flat.
The latter effect has an observational signature in the amplitude of the large scale perturbations of the cosmic microwave background and their correlation with large scale structures in the universe.

Cover Story - Here's to You, Mr. Vonnegut
Several years after I first read Vonnegut, when I was in college and becoming serious about being a writer, I decided to seek out my literary heroes in person, figuring that by asking them insightful questions — or, more accurately, through some process like osmosis — I could become one of them.
Tom Wolfe answered the questions the real reporters put to him, but his high, tight collar and superior breeding kept him from making eye contact, or in fact acknowledging anyone else's existence.
While my Kesey and Wolfe interviews were conducted with plenty of other people in the room — escorts and other reporters — I was stunned to find out that this time, it would be just Vonnegut and me. They put us in a classroom.

From the hyper-charged prose of Wolfe to Thompson's Mencken-on-acid screeds, to the moving Vietnam stories of John Sack and Michael Herr, the idea was to embellish hard facts for the sake of larger truths and broader narratives.
He focuses mostly on the flashier, trendier (and thus more popular) writers of the milieu (Wolfe, Thompson, Mailer) who've always had the most hip cachet among the New Journalists.
