Those mitigation efforts included the creation and preservation of nearly 465 acres (188 ha) of wetlands behind the district’s Prado Dam—an area Wildermuth calls the “environmental secret of Orange County” and now is proudly promoted through guided public tours that increase community awareness of the wetlands and the district’s water supply.
The district, working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, however, discovered that not only did the habitat need to be improved, but the vireo needed to be protected from a nesting parasite—cowbirds, a larger perching bird that would lay eggs in the vireo nests, pushing out the vireo’s own eggs.
