Kushimoto is bordered by the towns of Susami on the west, Kozagawa on the north, and Nachi-Katsuura on the east.
Kushimoto (or specifically, Shiono-Misaki) was the epicenter of the Great Nankai Earthquake, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake that struck the area on December 21, 1946 at 4:19am.
Of the 269 casualties in Wakayama Prefecture, the majority were in Kushimoto and in the city of Kainan.

The Oshima Station of the Fisheries Laboratory of Kinki University in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture, said it has succeeded for the first time in the world to achieve the 'complete aquaculture' of the bluefin tuna, cultivating them from artificial incubation, to very young tuna to adult fish capable of laying eggs.
There has been no precedent for any laboratory in the rest of the world to artificially grow any variety of large-sized tunas.
Young people wishing to become certified care workers number more than 25,000 a year in Japan at present, according to the Japan Association of Certified Care Workers.

None of the 10 crew members of the 1,177-ton Sunjoo Lucky was hurt but the unidentified other vessel, thought to be a fishing boat, is missing following the 8:40 p.m.
