Nergal: Definition and Links by Encyclopedian.com - All about Nergal
The importance of Kutha as a religious and at one time also as a political centre led to his surviving the tendency to concentrate the various sun-cults of Babylonia in Shamash.
In the astral-theological system he is the planet Mars, while in ecclesiastical art the great lion-headed colossi serving as guardians to the temples and palaces seem to be a symbol of Nergal, just as the bull-headed colossi are probably intended to typify Ninib.
The name of his chief temple at Kutha was E-shid-lam, from which the god receives the designation of Shidlamtaea, "the one that rises up from Shidlam." The cult of Nergal does not appear to have been as widespread as that of Ninib.

The name Nergal (or Nirgal or Nirgali) refers to a solar deity in Babylonia with the main seat of his cult at Kutha or Cuthah, represented by the mound of Tell-Ibrahim.
In the astral-theological system Nergal becomes the planet Mars, while in ecclesiastical art the great lion-headed colossi serving as guardians to the temples and palaces seem to symbolise Nergal, just as the bull-headed colossi probably typify Ninib.
Local associations with his original seat - Kutha - and the conception formed of him as a god of the dead acted in making him feared rather than actively worshipped.

Nergal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nergal is mentioned in the Hebrew bible as the deity of the city of Cuth (Cuthah): "And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal" (2 Kings, 17:30).
Local associations with his original seat  – Kutha – and the conception formed of him as a god of the dead acted in making him feared rather than actively worshipped.
Being a deity of the desert, and a god of fire, the negative aspects of the sun, and the underworld, and also being a god of one of the rivalling religions of Christianity and Judaism, Nergal was sometimes called a demon and even being identified with Satan.

He also makes a connection between Kutha and Kutu, two completely different cities and terms, and between Kutha, the ABSU (Enki's realm), the NAR MARRATU (which is the marshy area at the junction between the Persian Gulf and the three rivers) and the Greek 'abyss'.
While there is something that can be said about the ABSU and the Abyss -- both being the dark preformative world which exists alongside the mundane world, however, the Abyss is simply a void which is total and independent, whereas the ABSU is a real realm located between the Earth and the Netherworld.
Kutha and NAR MARRATU are concrete geographical entities -- although Kutha, being the city of Ereskigal, might be said to have a gateway to the Netherworld.
