Kutztown is a borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, 18 miles (29 km) west southwest of Allentown and 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Reading.
Kutztown's economy is strong and diverse, with workers employed in agriculture, manufacturing, education (mainly at Kutztown University) and the service sector.
As with the rest of Berks County, Kutztown was settled mainly by Germans, most of whom came from an area in southwest Germany called the Palatinate, which borders the Rhine River.

The village of Kutztown was laid out by property owner George Kutz in 1771 and became Berks County's second borough on March 1, 1815 (Reading was the first, in 1783).
The early fairgrounds were eventually sold, but in 1905 the Kutztown Fair Association was formed and continues to operate the event on its spacious grounds.
The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University now maintains a 60-acre, 19th century farmstead on which a museum holds more than 10,000 artifacts related to the Pennsylvania German settlers and their descendants.

KUTZTOWN, Pennsylvania -- They're being called the Kutztown 13 -- a group of high schoolers charged with felonies for bypassing security with school-issued laptops, downloading forbidden internet goodies and using monitoring software to spy on district administrators.
The students, their families and outraged supporters say authorities are overreacting, punishing the kids not for any heinous behavior -- no malicious acts are alleged -- but rather because they outsmarted the district's technology workers.
In Pennsylvania alone, more than a dozen school districts have reported student misuse of computers to police, and in some cases students have been expelled, according to Jeffrey Tucker, a lawyer for the district.

The attraction employed a stage coach opera bus wagon to transport people from the Virginville train station and Kutztown to and from the cave (okay, maybe it wasn't all that convenient in the early days).
First opened in 1981, it shares space with an Indian trading post and features history of the cave, region, a 1922 ice cream parlor, and a turn-of-century stagecoach used to transport visitors to the cave from town.

Author Ruth Bonner, a long-time resident of Kutztown and Medford, New Jersey, was chosen to author this unique volume due to the extent of her local historical knowledge and her many years of service to the community where she was born and raised.
A graduate of Kutztown High School and later a teacher there as well as a professor of English at Kutztown State College (now Kutztown University), Dr. Bonner passed away at age 92 in the autumn of 2001.
