  ULVER Kveldssanger reviews and MP3
Kveldssanger is an beutifully dark and melancholic masterpiece inspired by the mysteries of Norwegian nature and the romanticism wich arose in the late 17th century.
Kveldssanger shows the group fully exploring their tendancies towards mellow acoustic guitars and even flutes which emerged on occasion throughout their debut album Bergtatt and while it bears no musical relation to fl metal, is still viewed as part of their original "fl metal trilogy".
Though not particularily challenging, Kveldssanger is an extremely atmospheric listen (much like their fl metal efforts, yet in a completely different way) with some gorgeous acoustic work and a beautiful, relaxing quality.

The soothing sounds of "Kveldssanger" truly summon a nordic atmosphere, and for fans of Empyrium or other Metal bands gone mellow this is right up their alley.
Kveldssanger is, simply, one of the most beautiful albums ever released.
Kveldssanger is a folkish album consisting of acoustic guitars, flutes, and other instraments of the sort.

 Ulver
It has been usual for Haavard and myself for quite some time to gather in front of the fireplace, play acoustic guitar and create folk based, nostalgic and melancholic melodies independent of our interests in the metal music, therefore this album was a very natural thing to do.
We have decided to release this album under the Ulver moniker, because the concept and visual aspect of the music on this album is entirely the same as we do when performing in metal manners.
Aiwarikiar: "Kveldssanger" will be released by Head Not Found/Voices of Wonder at the dawn of the year 1996.

Ulver : Kveldssanger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The first of several surprising stylistic turns for Ulver, who was originally pegged as a fl metal band, Kveldssanger is an album of acoustic, classically tinged Norse folk songs, all written and arranged by vocalist Garm.
This style was hinted at during some of the acoustic interludes on their previous album, Bergtatt, but here it has been more fully developed into actual songs with thoughtful, though sparse, arrangements.
Listening to Kveldssanger, it is hard to picture this album being made by a group still in their teens, let alone by one whose next album would yield the savage fl metal of Nattens Madrigal/Madrigal of the Night.

The only album by them that I have listened to is Kveldssanger, which, in short a folk album.
And as far as I know, Ulver is one of the worst produced, thrashiest and most tru fl metal bands in the world.
The opening track is laced with male choruses, cellos and flutes, and much of the rest of the album is no different.

Then, having established themselves as one of fl metal's most revered bands, they shed that skin entirely with Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1998), a double-disc collage of techno and trip-hop beats, metal guitars, ambient interludes, and spoken word that, not surprisingly, alienated many fans.
I don't find anything on this disc as powerful or moving as Kveldssanger, but for soundtrack-type listening lurking in the background at 4 a.m., I still enjoy it.
It's hard to say whether this is a stopover before their next big, surprising move, or a sign of Ulver settling into some gray ambient/electronic niche (with praise from the politically correct avant-garde community coming several years down the line).

This one’s the 3rd release of this band hailing from Germany, but it actually hasn’t got much to do with their first two albums, which presented a melancholic Black Metal with strong acoustic and folkloristic elements (especially the 2nd one).
This CD is the most impressing release in the Neofolk genre since Ulver’s Kveldssanger in my opinion, to give you an idea of what Empyrium sound like on this release.
This is different that 98% of the weekly releases, listening this record you notice that the band gives a shit about earning money, their aim is to transport feelings and emotions into their songs offering something unique and very special to their listeners.

I can't honestly claim to have heard tons of fl metal music, as whenever I take a listen to any of it, I get bored: having read the superb 'Lords of Chaos' book, I was hoping fl metal would be atmospheric, Eurocentric, original and awe-inspiring.
Apart from Ulver's 'Kveldssanger', most fl metal appears to be adolescent, often amateurishly played and tediously 'rebellious'.
If there are any other albums out there that stretch the boundaries of the bm genre this way, I'd love to hear about them...

To please their parents, girlfriends and teachers they didn't record another fl-metal album but instead they recorded Kveldssanger, a beautiful acoustic folk album.
Still as dark as their previous works, but a little easier on the ears.
Okay, I especially miss Kveldssanger, and Metamorphosis is also missing, but I think they did cover every other release, even Vargnatt.

Bergtatt proved to only be the first stepping stone, though it does have a bit in common with its successor Kveldssanger with the acoustic-folk feel.
Ulver obviously has since taken quite the left turns, but rest assured their first lap was one of their best.
Completing the original trio of albums, Ulver trumped the entire underground and so-called elite fl metal world by completely outdoing the entire genre at their own game.

The follow-up, Kveldssanger, was a bit of a surprise—an all-acoustic fl metal album with traditional Norse folk melodies and chanting.
There is an interesting moment at the 5:25 mark when the song begins to fade out, only to roar back a second later with even more powerful synth lines.
This piece is also an instrumental and would work very well as a film soundtrack (Ulver received a Norwegian Grammy nomination last year with their score for the movie “Lyckantropen Themes”).

Many consider this piece of work to be boring and not ´fl metal´;.
The reason being is that you have the extreme elements of Ulver, contrasted with the folkish elements on Kveldssanger.

This is Ulver's second release, released in 1995 on Head not Found records.
'Kveldssanger' is an all acoustic folk album, combining tranquil, relaxing guitar melodies with some more harsh acoustics make for epic and beautiful album with vocals that sing like an angel would.
This song's mood leads well into the next track Kveldssang, it takes awhile for this song to develop and when it finally does the song comes to an abrupt halt.

Krisoffer Rygg), guitarists Haavard and Aismal, bass player Skoll and drummer Aiwarikiar, Ulver named themselves after the Norwegian word for "wolves" and have based many of their records to date on a philosophical concept.
For example, Bergtatt (1995) came from a Norse legend concerning mythical creatures, Kveldssanger (1996) was a collection of acoustic devotional music, and Nattens Madrigal (1997) took the theme of wolves to a higher plane.

Their album Kveldssanger is a norse folk album and is all acoustic.
I suggest getting "Bergtatt" for the fl metal sound as it mixes the folk and fl metal.
Kveldssanger is an obvious choice for the folk sound because it's the only folk album they did.

The overall result was raw fl metal, which wasn’t played at a million miles per hour and had strange folk influences and some clean vocals present.
Actually the only real folk song was track three ‘Trollskogen,’ which sounds a lot like the brilliant songs found on Ulver’s second album ‘Kveldssanger.’ All the others are mostly melodic raw fl metal songs with buzzing raw guitars and some occasional acoustic guitars thrown in.
The truth is Ulver’s ‘Kveldssanger’ (Evening songs) is a beautiful acoustic folk album that should be heard by everyone that has interest in this type of music.

With just about any music, be it metal or something mellower in nature, it’s very hard to determine what will translate well to an acoustic version.
While certainly very pop friendly in its day, the Alice in Chains Unplugged album was a prime example of a success, where Ulver’s Kveldssanger was ultimately uninspiring and quite boring.
The Gathering generally play a different style of music than either of those bands did at the points in their career when those albums were released, so it was anyone’s guess how their self-proclaimed “trip-rock” would turn out with the amps turned off and the acoustics brought out.

Second release in the trilogy chronicling the sinister aspects of Norse folklore.
If Bergtatt is the beginning into the sinister, the 'Kveldssanger' must be the calm before the storm.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - ULVER - Perdition City
What had started with the "Marriage Of Heaven And Hell"-album has reached it's 'peak' with "Perdition City." After incorporating more and more influences from non-Metal and integrating electronic and poppy elements into their sound, I haven't found a single guitar on this album anymore.
This no longer is the ULVER of the trilogy "Bergtatt", "Kveldssanger" and "Nattens Madrigal", apart from the name there is nothing, absolutely nothing in common anymore.
"Bergtatt" had been very good, "Kveldssanger" brilliant, "Nattens Madrigal" at least uncompromising, but after that they went downhill and with "Perdition City" ULVER finally have managed to get rid of all of their old fans once and for all.

Having finished two movie soundtracks, with Lyckantropen Themes and receiving a Norwegian Grammy nomination, Ulver's A Quick Fix Of Melancholy is from the spaces inbetween.
Included is a instrumental track as well as a bonus remix of 'Nattleite' from the 1995 Kveldssanger album.
This track is the least engaging of the bunch, but serves a nice come-down from an exhausting musical journey.

Ulver is a very talented group, they started out as a fl-metal band, later on their style took a much more avantgarde sound, going into electronics and experimenting with a variety of ways to compose music.
However, Kveldssanger was composed on their fl-metal era, but as an appendix I would say, this is not fl-metal, nor leaning towards BM after all, it is a magnificent folk album with clean vocals sung in Norwegian.
This is nothing you would expect from a fl-metal band, I guess, the production is crystal clear here, and they've took a nice advantage of natural atmosphere.

The first album, Bergtatt, is a combination of folk and fl metal, while the next album, Kveldssanger, is straight up folk, and lastly, Nattens Madrigal, is an all-out fl metal assault.
After that, they pretty much dropped any form of fl metal from their music and instead chose to embrace electronica.
Although it's only a mere four tracks (three new ones and a remix from the Kveldssanger album), what's offered is filled with atmospheric splendor and should not be passed up.

After reading an article on the extremely obscure genre of "Neo Folk" and hearing that Ulver's Kveldssanger is basically the album the genre is based around I wanted to hear some bands.
You may have a different idea of what Neo Folk is to me. It's basically...
folk but really modernised (yeah I've wondered why Kveldssanger is "Neo Folk", it sounds like any old folk to me), like with ambient elements and some electronic instruments.

 Band: Ulver
Ulver is an ever changing band stylistically, wether it be horridly produced Black Metal, to Industrial or Folk, this band has done it.
The only two noteworthy albums are Kveldssanger, which is acoustic folk, and Bergtatt, which is folk-metal along the lines of old Opeth.
Sadly the band didn't realise that they were on to a good thing with these two albums, and have totally abandoned this style.
