KWADUKUZA -- Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini and Deputy President Jacob Zuma were among thousands of people who attended King Shaka's Day memorial celebrations at KwaDukuza (formerly Stanger) in northern KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend.
The celebration commemorated his death and is held in KwaDukuza annually near his grave.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism website KwaDukuza was where Shaka built his last capital, called kwaDukuza -- "the place of the lost person".

The site, in a small garden in the centre of kwaDukuza, is marked by a simple stone memorial erected in his honour by the Zulu nation.
In 1873 a European town was planned on the site and named after William Stanger, the surveyor general of Natal.

The murder of KwaDukuza municipal manager Nathi Mthembu last week has left residents of the town north of Durban living in fear of an upsurge in taxi violence, which has claimed close to 100 lives over the past five years.
KwaDukuza (formerly Stanger) is crawling with police and the local municipality has thrown a ring of steel around Mayor Sduduzo Gumede following threats to his life after Mthembu's murder last Thursday.
A KwaDukuza police officer who has been involved in investigating the violence said the two taxi associations had been feuding for 20 years.

Taxi operations in the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast town of KwaDukuza (formerly Stanger) were to cease at midnight on Sunday, the SABC reported.
This was in line with a decision by the provincial transport department following a dispute between rival taxi organisations.
According to the SABC, the Stanger and KwaMaphumulo Taxi Associations had agreed to suspend operations and to participate in a special tribunal on Wednesday to resolve the problem.

Shaka was murdered at kwaDukuza - the present day Stanger - in 1828 and the centre of Zulu influence shifted further North, across the Tugela river.
A farm labourers' village was built in 1904 to accommodate the indentured Indian workers who tended the cane fields until 1907 when the indentured labour system was abandoned in the colony.
Many formerly indentured labourers, now discharged from their contracts, stayed on to work the farm and a happy community thrived here.

On the 22 September, shaka was enjoying the festivities of a ceremony while waiting for a visiting Tswana tribe to come and pay him tribute, when Dingane and Mhlangana, his two half brothers strode into the kraal and stabbed him to death.

A KwaDukuza policeman who has been involved in investigating the violence said the two taxi associations had been feuding for 20 years.
The policeman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said violence had increased in the past four years, with taxi owners, drivers, commuters, police and municipal officials being killed.

My town’s (KwaDukuza) child and family welfare’s annual Winter Fair was held last week from 30 June till 3rd July.
Being a member of the KwaDukuza Diwali Committee has its perks: you get to wear a cool badge at the event (that I make ;)) and have access to almost any part of the grounds.
This year is the first year I’m doing it for Child Welfare, normally I do it for the KwaDukuza Diwali Committee.

I WAS among the thousands who celebrated Heritage Day not far from king Shaka’s grave, in KwaDukuza, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, on Saturday.
I wondered how his message would have been received in the kingdom where the day clearly belonged to the great warrior king buried in the town formerly known as Stanger.
There must also be other reasons why other races do not come in their numbers to the party, although there is food and drink for everybody.
