When the Bantustan of KwaZulu (meaning the place of the Zulu) was re-incorporated into the Natal province after the end of Apartheid in 1994, the province was renamed KwaZulu-Natal.
The province has three different geographic areas: the lowland region along the Indian Ocean coast; plains in the central section; and two mountainous areas, the Drakensberg Mountains in the west and the Lebombo Mountains in the north.
The Natal Parliament was disbanded in 1910 when the Union of South Africa was formed, and the Assembly became the meeting place of the Natal Provincial Council.

Province of the Republic of South Africa, formed from the former province of Natal and the former black homeland of KwaZulu; area 91,481 sq km/35,321 sq mi; population (2000 est) 8,857,600 (75% Zulu); it is the most populous province of the Republic.
The conflict in 1990–94 between followers of Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the president of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), who wanted federal status for KwaZulu-Natal, and those of the African National Congress (ANC), who stressed the unity of the country, caused the deaths of some 10,000 people and impeded the economic development of the province.
KwaZulu-Natal was created in May 1994, and the towns of Pietermaritzberg (capital of Natal) and Ulundi ruled as joint capital.

The words "crisis", "peace", "violence", "instability" and "threats" had been abundantly used to underpin an image of KwaZulu Natal, Mr Buthelezi said.
