Players search for kwacha’s real value   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The paper says the challenge now is to chart the “fundamental” value—based on economic variables like interest rates— of the kwacha by leaving it to depreciate by a margin equal to the real interest rate spread or differential between the kwacha and US dollar.
Since the kwacha is already trading at last year’s proposed fundamental value, it would be logical to conclude that the local unit should be expected to depreciate further from its current levels.
As things stand, the way to go for the kwacha now should be down, as it prepares for the upward swing later on its way to reclaiming its clout enjoyed in the 1960s and 70s.

“But for the remainder of the year, the kwacha is expected to fluctuate according to its usual seasonal pattern, whereby it depreciates in the final quarter of the year after tobacco auctions have closed,” reads part of the report.
But Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe said the strength of the kwacha against major global currencies is as a result of good microeconomic fundamentals.

THE stability of the kwacha, currently selling at an average of 139 to the United States Dollar, seems guaranteed on the back of funds trickling in from debt cancellation, a Stanbic Bank has said.
However, despite the sluggish export reserves, the report says the local currency value to the dollar and euro, was almost flat throughout August and September, at about K138 and K178 respectively.
However, Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) says the appreciation of the kwacha based on debt relief funds is not good for the economy.

Apparently, the IMF would like to see a weaker kwacha at this time when sales of tobacco and tea—the country’s major export commodities—are in season.
The aim of such a directive is to help the country build her dwindling reserves in the long term, narrow her trade deficit and boost kwacha earnings for producers.
This could complement government’s strategy to turn Malawi into a mass producer and exporter as opposed to a wholesale importer and consumer it has been for a long time at the expense of building a foundation for growth.

The good news is that a strong, stable kwacha could attract foreign direct investment and allow local businessmen dealing in kwacha to plan more efficiently; the bad news is that the strong kwacha has hurt exporters in the agriculture sector.
They are now planning to cut more than 500,000 jobs because their earnings have been slashed as a result of the strong currency, increasing the country's already high percentage of people living in poverty.
In October the kwacha was trading at 4,502 to the US dollar, but this week it went to between Kwacha 3,200 and 3,500 to the dollar, mainly as a result of rising demand for copper, Zambia's major foreign currency earner, by China and the United States.

 jctr.org.zm - Press Release
If the strengthening of the Kwacha against the dollar is considered as a meaningful indication, not only for itself but as a sign of how the larger economy is improving, as some observers have put it, then there is cause for greater optimism about the future by the Zambian people.
However, the fact that the strengthening of the Kwacha has not had any perceivable relationship to the reduction of key production ingredients such as fuel means that this phenomenon is meaningful only for itself.
For now, whatever the reasons for the appreciation of the Kwacha are or may be, one issue remains clear: we still have a lot of work to do in Zambia to improve people’s lives.
