When it was created in 1967, the land area of Kwara State extended from Borgu area in the north west to the eastern limit of the present Kogi State in the east.
However, further states creation and boundary readjustment exercises in the country by successive military administrations since 1967 have led to considerable losses in the land area as well as human and material resources of Kwara State, and these in turn have had their toll on the development potentialities of the state.

State governments owe several billions of the foreign debt, prompting the Federal Government to deduct part of the debt from their monthly allocations to service the debt.
Describing Kwara as a highly indebted state in Nigeria, he revealed that N180 million was deducted from the federal allocations to the state on account of the foreign debt and was happy that the monster was being caged permanently.
Kwara, he said, supported that the $12 billion balance of the debt be paid from the excess crude oil sales.

The emirship tussle in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital is yet to be over as one life was reportedly lost yesterday, following the violence trailing the appointment of a new Mogaji Aare of Ilorin and the removal of Baba Isale by Emir Ibrahim Sulu Gambari.
The campaign office of the former governor of the Kwara State, Muhammed Lawal, was reportedly set ablaze but another report said it was the house of the late Busari Alabi Alasa (Lawal’s father) that was burnt.
It was alleged that his house was set ablaze by the policemen mounting security in the area but the police spokesman in the state, Marcus Gideon, denied the allegation.
