The 14 Air Force was pulling away from Kweilin which was waiting, stripped and unpeopled, for the will of the enemy.
The warning net was gone and Kweilin Air Base was defenseless against marauding columns of Japanese cavalry, known to be approaching within less than 40 miles, with some rumors locating them only 10 miles away.
Kweilin itself is a dead city, dead as only a teeming Chinese city suddenly emptied can seem dead.

Japanese aircraft attempted raids against the US airfield at Kweilin on the 5th, but were met over the target area by P-40's, losing 5 aircraft.

Shannon, now a retired Delta Airways captain living in Hunters Creek Village in Houston's suburbs, would discover their mission had resulted in the tragic death of a valiant but unidentified American pilot found in the downed plane's wreckage.
It became clear this pilot was trying to fly a patched-up fighter from the Japanese-held Philippines to refuge in Kweilin and had gone down just 20 minutes short of his goal.
