Kwinana is actually an Aboriginal word, from the Kimberly region, meaning 'pretty maiden'.
However, that said, Kwinana is not defined by urban sprawl, there are three public beaches at Cockburn Sound where the public can swim and enjoy the sunset at Kwinana Beach looking out to Garden Island - the SS Kwinana herself is actually part of the jetty at Kwinana Beach.
The rusting hulk of the Kwinana ship was cut down to low water level, and the centre was filled with limestone to form a platform as part of the jetty at Kwinana.

 Kwinana Cabin, Western Australia
Kwinana cabin controls a yard of the same name, together with a number of industrial branches, located on the outskirts of Perth.
Kwinana cabin opened in 1967, but the structure and frame came second-hand from Koojedda and had originally been erected in 1959.
This is one of a number of semaphore signals at Kwinana, and it appears to be very much a standard McKenzie and Holland product although there are fine detail differences against British examples.

The name stuck and now the town of Kwinana embraces the satellite towns of Medina, Calista, Parmelia and Orelia as well as the huge industrial complex which is recognised as one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.
However, the district of Kwinana has always been where it is today even if it was originally known to us as part of Rockingham and even earlier by another name unknown to Europeans.
Kwinana, a subdivision in the Kimberly cattle district of North West Australia, was selected as an alternative name.

In fairness, the beach on which the wreck of the Kwinana can be found, and even the beaches around the main grain jetty, are clean and suitable for swimming.
The township of Kwinana was nothing more than a sleepy, underdeveloped holiday resort until 1952 when the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now known as BP) entered into an agreement with the Western Australian government to establish an oil refinery in the region.
Interestingly Kwinana township, which is separated from most of the heavy industry by massive sand dunes, is a typical piece of Australian suburbia.

 CBH Kwinana shatters rail inloading records
Grain is moving into the CBH Kwinana Grain Terminal at the most rapid rate ever recorded, due to efficient rail movements, to meet a busy shipping program.
CBH Manager Logistics Michael Musgrave said the Kwinana Terminal had received 200,000 tonnes of grain per week for the past two weeks, which compared to an average 50,000 tonnes per week being discharged from rail at the Terminal.
The Kwinana Terminal is the largest of the four CBH Grain Terminals with storage capacity of over one million tonnes and the capacity to load ships at a speed of 5,000 tonnes per hour.
