The unrest broke out in the central town of Kyaukse on 19 October and spread to the city of Mandalay and then on to the capital Yangon, unnerving the ruling military which has rolled out a sweeping security crackdown.
Unrest sparked Witness reports obtained by AFP said the trouble began in Kyaukse during mid-October festivals to mark the Buddhist Lent, including competitions and festivities centred on Buddhist monasteries.
After a minor dispute over one of the competitions a stone was thrown into a monastery compound, sparking anger among the monks who wrongly believed the occupants of a nearby mosque were responsible.

In Kyaukse, near Mandalay in the central part of the country, a mob led by Buddhist monks attacked Muslim homes and mosques following an alleged attack by Muslim youth on monks reciting sutras to commemorate the end of Buddhist Lent.
In both Kyaukse and Rangoon, witnesses claimed that many of the Buddhist attackers systematically were transported into and out of the Muslim areas.
Seventy Muslims were arrested and 31 Kyaukse Muslims were sentenced in December 2003 (1 received the death penalty) for their involvement in the violence, including the alleged murder of a senior Buddhist monk.

The factory is one of several being built by Myanma General and Maintenance Industries, under the Ministry of Industry (1), using funds from a $15 million loan provided early last year by India, according to a source close to the project.
A total of $4.8 million from the loan was allocated to MGMI, which is also building a sewing machine plant at Kyaukse, as well as a textile finishing factory.
The bicycle factory is due to go into production in April and will make 70 per cent of the parts needed for each machine, including rims, frames, forks, mudguards, chain guards, carriers and spokes.
