Topic: Kyffin Williams

Sir Kyffin Williams | Obituaries | Guardian Unlimited
Kyffin liked to say that he had had no talent, partly for fear of seeming boastful, partly because it had taken persistence to develop the underlying gift and his highly distinctive palette-knife style.
According to Kyffin, his tutors mainly despaired of him, but the encouragement he received from Allan Gwynne-Jones would establish the tenor of his teaching at Highgate School, where Kyffin was senior art master from 1944 until 1973.
Kyffin was immensely lovable, with great charm and smiling eyes but, deep down, he was a shy man who took refuge in the wealth of stories of which he was a brilliant raconteur.

BBC - Wales - Sir Kyffin Williams
Sir Kyffin Williams was at once a pillar of the establishment and a thorn in its side.
Williams' career as an artist would probably never have happened had he not been diagnosed with epilepsy as a young man. A doctor advised him, "As you are, in fact, abnormal, I think it would be a good idea if you took up art".

Sir Kyffin was a Royal Academician and Honorary Fellow of the University of Wales Colleges, Swansea, Bangor and Aberystwyth - he was knighted in 1999.
Sir Kyffin was, by his own admission, an obsessive and a pessimist whose turbulent inner life was reflected in the heavy oils he applied with a palette knife and in the sombre mountains that he painted.

Kyffin Williams and his remarkable paintings are not well known in Scotland, although he saw himself as greatly influenced by another painter of wild sea and landscapes, Joan Eardley.
Kyffin rarely stopped talking and his stories, often against himself, were legendary, coming out in several books and cartoons.
Knighted in 1999, he looked every inch the country gent and must have been the only, or at any rate the last, modern painter to do the business in tweeds, collar and tie, protected carefully by overalls from the flying impasto.
