However, the historic predecessor of the NaUKMA, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Kiev-Mogila Academy), was one of the oldest and the most distinguished academic and theological schools in Eastern Europe.
National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, NaUKMA ( Ukrainian : Нацїональний унїверситет «Києво-Могилянська академїя» Natsional'nyi universytet "Kyyevo-Mohylians'ka akademiya", НаУКМА), located in Kiev (Kyiv), Ukraine is one of the country's leading national schools of higher education.
It was established in 1632 by Peter Mogila (Petro Mohyla), a Metropolitan of Kiev and Galicia.

Textbooks, written by professors of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy, were used by students both of the Academy and of other educational establishments in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, for several decades.
In 1819, a religious school was opened on the premises of the former Kyiv Mohyla Academy.
Metropolitan Petro Mohyla, an energetic promoter of Ukrainian culture, had the Lavra School established at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery in 1631, and the Kyiv Brotherhood School in Podil merged with the Lavra school in 1632.

In the early nineteenth century it became evident that an institution of a new type was needed and upon the foundation of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy such an institution was eventually built.
And yet, great as these differences are, the fact remains that the Kyiv Shevchenko University of the twentieth century is the lineal descendent of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy.

Revived in 1991 as a modern university, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy was recognized in Ukraine as a symbol of the new state.
Mohyla shunned the staid Byzantine educational model then dominant in Ukraine; instead he patterned his academy on Europe's Jesuit institutions.
The academy's inception dates from the early 17th century, the beginning of the national liberation movement and the reunion of all Ukrainian lands that had been divided and appropriated by neighboring countries.

In 1992, after a 175-year hiatus, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy was reinstated as a secular teaching institution, becoming a symbol of the rebirth of independent Ukraine.
The history of the Kyiv-Mohyla (or Kievan Mohyla) Academy began in 1615, when found the Kyiv Epiphany Brotherhood Monastery.
Its affiliated school merged in 1632 with the Kyivan Cave (Lavra) Monastery School to form a college, which was the forerunner of the Academy.

 Ukraine-American Educational Exchange Closes with Distinguished Achievements and Promise (Chicago Kyiv Sister Cities program)
The Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America has promoted the collaboration between Northwestern and Kyiv Mohyla in its efforts to support the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy, a leading institution of higher learning in Ukraine, attain a higher level of academic excellence and an international presence.
A facilitating partner in orchestrating the exchange was the Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America, which arranged for the program's implementation with Northwestern's U.S. National Science Foundation Center for Innovation and Technology Management, located in the Kellogg School of Management.
