Topic: Kyklos

Kyklos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kyklos is a term used by some classical Greek authors to describe what they saw as the political cycle of governments in a society.
The concept of "The Kyklos" is first elaborated in Plato's Republic, chapters VIII and IX.
According to Polybius, who has the most fully developed view of the cycle, it rotates through the three basic forms of government, democracy, aristocracy, and monarchy and the three degenerate forms of each of these governments ochlocracy, oligarchy, and tyranny.

According to its etymology, an encyclical (from the Greek egkyklios, kyklos meaning a circle) is nothing more than a circular letter.
In modern times, usage has confined the term almost exclusively to certain papal documents which differ in their technical form from the ordinary style of either Bulls or Briefs, and which in their superscription are explicitly addressed to the patriarchs, primates, archbishops, and bishops of the Universal Church in communion with the Apostolic See.
