The Kyōhō reforms (享保の改革) were a set of reforms instigated by the eighth shogun of Japan, Tokugawa Yoshimune, that lasted from the beginning of his reign in 1716 until 1736.
The reforms were aimed at making the shogunate financially solvent.
Because of the tensions between Confucian ideology and the economic reality of Tokugawa Japan (Confucian principles that money was defiling vs. the necessity for a cash economy), Yoshimune found it necessary to shelve certain Confucian principles that were hampering his reform process.

The Royal Academy of Arts : : Effects of the Kyoho Reforms
The Kyoho Reforms might account for the sudden disappearance after 1718 of prints in the grand o-oban format (about 58 x 32 cm), which had been in vogue since the late 1680s, with hand-colouring dominated by a brilliant orange (tan-e).
The disappearance also seems to have coincided with the end of Kiyomasu I's career, although whether he died, retired or ceased working for some other reason has not been established.
The hand-decorating techniques of beni-e and urushi-e were almost always used together, and continued at least until the early 1740s for smaller formats, and longer for 'perspective pictures' (uki-e) and the so-called 'wide pillar prints' (habahiro hashira-e) that were popular throughout the 1740s.
