Kanji   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Kanji are one of the five character sets used in the modern Japanese writing system, the other four being hiragana, katakana, the Roman alphabet (r&333;maji), and Arabic numerals.
Many ateji (kanji used only for their phonetic value) have meanings derived from their usage: for example, the now-archaic &20124;&32048;&20124; ajia was formerly used to write "Asia" in kanji; the character &20124; now means Asia in such compounds as &26481;&20124; t&333;a, "East Asia".
The ideographic iteration mark (&12293;) is used to indicate that the preceding kanji is to be repeated, functioning similarly to a ditto mark in English.

The Kyoiku kanji are further subdivided into six grades, representing the syllabus of each of the first six years of the Japanese education system.
The early Kyoiku kanji tend to be the most graphically simple ones, whereas the JLPT kanji appear to be ordered more in terms of how common they are.
The Kanji SITE was designed primarily for people studying for the JLPT exam, but I'm currently working to adapt the site so that you can study according to the Joyo (and Kyoiku) syllabus instead.

Kanji are often called ideographs, meaning that the characters refer to an idea rather than to their pronunciation.
Kanji dictionaries include radicals, but there are other stroke groups too, which frequently occur in kanji, although, even in Japanese, there does not seem to be any technical term for them.
Although neither the analysis of kanji into strokes or grapheme elements, nor animated kanji showing stroke order and direction are totally new, the problem until now was that for every one of these different approaches new sets of data had to be created for every different purposes.

The kun'yomi (訓読み) of a kanji (also called its kun reading, Japanese reading, or somewhat misleadingly its native reading) is a reading based on the pronunciation of a native Japanese word, or yamatokotoba, that closely approximated the meaning of the Chinese character when it was introduced.

Known as the Toyo Kanji (that is to say "daily use" Kanji), notable in this decree was the statement that from that time on, the given [i.e.,personal] names of all Japanese could only be taken from it and no other source.
Also, 28 characters were added into the main body of the 1,850 Toyo Kanji, these being generally used and recognized abbreviations and redundant variants (with an exact amount of 28 characters being accordingly removed from the main body so that the amount of 1,850 could remain as a constant).
Kanji can be used to form "pictorial" glyphs alongside its use as a source of sounds, much as it is in Chinese.

 About Kanji
In modern times, when Kanji are used in a word of native Japanese origin, the pronunciation of that character is called a Kun-yomi "reading", and is usually followed by an inflectional stem written with Hiragana script known as the Okurigana (or kana which follow).
In fact, "Shuo Wen Chie Tsu", the first Chinese dictionary and the earliest known text to study the pictorial origin of Chinese characters, was written in the 2nd century AD.

Kyôiku kanji 教育漢字 (also known as 'Gakunenbetsu kanji haitôhyô' 学年別漢字配当表) is a list of 1,006 kanji developed and maintained by the Japanese Ministry of Education that prescribes which kanji Japanese schoolchildren should learn for each year of elementary school.
Although the list is designed for Japanese children, it is also very useful for non-native speakers, by limiting the kanji to the most commonly used in the culture.
(In some contexts, the term Gakushû Kanji ("Study characters") is used to refer to the list of 1,006 and the term Kyôiku kanji reserved for the list of 996 without the roman numerals.)

I've been searching for a good kanji resource that divides the kanji by jôyô: kyôiku (1,006), kyôiku igai (939), and jinmeiyô.
Below is a link to a nice page that divides the kyôiku and kyôiku igai alphabetically by kana and sepatates the two categories by color.
This is fairly irrelevant, though -- when you get to the point in your studies where you need to start knowing the Jinmeiyo kanji, it's unlikely that you'll still be working through them methodically one by one.
