Kyoto is an easy place to get around as the city is planned in a grid like structure and is quite flat apart from the surrounding hills.
The Miyako (found in eastern Kyoto) and the New Miyako (slightly south from the Kyoto Station) run a service bus at no cost (as long as you are a renting one of their rooms in either of the hotels) between their hotels which leaves every 40 minutes during the week days.
Kyoto is a great spot to soak in a huge amount and range of temples, shrines, culture and architecture as well as having many photo opportunities.

Osaka, Kyoto and Nara are close enough together to stay in one hotel for your entire trip.
But last time when I visited Kyoto in 2002, there are some volunteers at the Kyoto Visitor Centre at Kyoto Tower (just cross the road from Kyoto train station) provide free guide service.
There is another tourist info center on the 2nd floor of the station (elevator on the right of the main entry facing K. Tower), but not much English is spoken and they don't (didn't when I was there last May) manage hotels reservations and have very little English documentation except for maps.
