  Kyrie - LoveToKnow 1911
In the Anglican Book of Common Prayer the Kyrie is introduced into the orders for Morning and Evening Prayer, and also, with an additional petition, as a response made by the congregation after the reading of each of the Ten Commandments at the opening of the Communion Service.
These responses are usually sung, and the name Kyrie is thus also applied to their musical setting.
In the Lutheran Church the Kyrie is still said or sung in the original Greek.

The Straight Dope Mailbag: What does "Kyrie eleison" mean?
Part of the introductory rites of the Roman Catholic Mass, the Kyrie eleison (Greek for "Lord, have mercy") is a song by which the faithful praise the Lord and implore his mercy.
The Kyrie was finally incorporated into the Latin sacramentary in the sixth century for Matins, Mass and Vespers, according to Canon 3 of the Synod of Vaison (529).
In today's Vatican II Church, the Kyrie has been translated into English and is ordinarily prayed/sung by the assembly (which means everyone, ministers included) after the Penitential Rite, in keeping with the rubrics (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 30-31).

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Kyrie Eleison
Kyrie Eleison (Greek for "Lord have mercy"; the Latin transliteration supposes a pronunciation as in Modern Greek) is a very old, even pre-Christian, expression used constantly in all Christian liturgies.
The names of the various Kyries in the Vatican Gradual (for instance, Kyrie Cunctipotens genitor Deus of the tenth century, Kyrie magnæ Deus potentiæ of the thirteenth century, etc.) are still traces of this.
The Kyrie Eleison (as all the Ordinary and proper of the choir) may also be sung to figured music that does not offend against the rules of Pius X's "Motu proprio" on church music (22 Nov., 1903).

The Kyrie was originally a litany, in which the same words were repeated many times with slight changes.
The text was eventually codified as a threefold "Kyrie eleison" (Lord have mercy), a threefold "Christe eleison" (Christ have mercy), and another threefold "Kyrie eleison," reflecting the Trinity at two levels.
Often Kyries are performed antiphonally, alternating between two halves of the choir, as in the performance on the recordings.

Mena Blaschitz placed this fragment in 1774, writing "they [K166g, K296a, K258a, 422a] show in the notation of music and words so much resemblance that they must be chronologically very close to one another", and using a facsimile of an aria from La finta gardiniera as her year marker.
On the reverse side of the page containing the Kyrie Einstein related there were two sketches, which were written later than the Kyrie.
He wrote "When all of these similarities between the two pieces are considered, I think it is safe to say that the musical ideas of K. 422a and the opening of the first movement to K. 575 are closely related both on the local thematic level, and on the larger level of phrase structure".
