The Kyrielle (KEAR-ee-EL) derives from a medieval French troubador verse pattern originally written in octosyllabic lines (or longer), usually unrhymed, as was the French tradition.
As so many French patterns are, it is characterized by much repetition of words and phrases, and each verse ends with the same refrain.
In modern usage, the first 3 lines are iambic tetrameter (sometimes pentameter); the 4th line, a refrain, is repeated in each verse; it is also iambic, but may be as short as 1 foot or as long as the others.
