Bonfiglioli, who was fourteen, should have been in the shelter himself but was playing in the street; the incident apparently left him with the conviction that the good perish and the mischievous survive.
The start of Bonfiglioli’s writing career coincided roughly with the end of his career as a dealer and the end of his marriage, though what caused what is hard to say.
Margaret Bonfiglioli recalls her husband toward the end of their marriage shyly showing her the first few pages of “Don’t Point That Thing at Me.” By then, he’d become involved with Judith Todd, a former secretary of his, and after the divorce, in 1969, they moved into her house in the Lancashire village of Silverdale.

 Charlie Mortdecai (Kyril Bonfiglioli)
After leaving school at 16, Bonfiglioli spent 5 years in the army before being admitted (as a widower with two small children) to Balliol College, Oxford, where he read English, after which he set up as an art dealer in Oxford and claimed to be "loved and respected by all who knew him slightly".
As Bonfiglioli explained at the start of the first of these, "This is not an autobiographical novel: it is about some other portly, dissolute, immoral and middle-aged art dealer".
There is further interesting biographical information about Bonfiglioli (widely known as Bon) in The Mortdecai ABC (1991) by his divorced second wife, Margaret Bonfiglioli (he officially married twice, but had various other partnerships, declaring himself "a dedicated marrier of beautiful women", and fathering five children).

The art of the fl comedy thriller is a particularly difficult one to bring off successfully: err too much on the side of the parodic, and the whole edifice collapses.
