	Kyu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The kyu ranking system varies from art to art and school to school: while in some arts, all the kyu-level practitioners wear white belts, other arts use different coloured belts, tags or stripes to mark kyu grades, although coloured belts are not widely used in Japan itself.
		In aikido, for example, there are six kyu grades: Rokukyu (6th kyu) white belt, gokyu (5th kyu) yellow belt, yonkyu (4th kyu) orange belt, sankyu (3rd kyu) green belt, nikyu (2nd kyu) blue belt and ikkyu (1st kyu) brown belt.
		Yellow represents a seed, orange is the sunlight it begins to absorb, green represents shoots as the plant grows, blue is the sky the plant moves towards and brown is representative of the trunk of the plant hardening.

		Kyu Sakamoto (Sakamoto Kyu in Japanese) was born Hisashi Oshima (Oshima Hisashi in Japanese) on 10 November 1941 in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
		Sadly and prematurely, 43-year-old Kyu Sakamoto was killed on 12 August 1985, when JAL Flight 123, a 747 bound from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Osaka, lost pieces of its tail sections and spiraled downward nightmarishly for 30 minutes (long enough for some passengers to scribble shaky farewells to their families).
		Although Kyu Sakamoto's golden voice was stilled, his songs remain popular in Japan and overseas.

		Kyu exams require each karateka to demonstrate proficiency in three area: kihon (basics), kata, and kumite (sparring).
		If more than one person is testing for a particular kyu, then the kihon and kata are usually executed by two or three people at a time.

		What are the requirements for each kyu and dan ranking?
		For the vast majority of practitioners, the Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Hombu has adopted a modern kyu and dan ranking system, with eight kyu ranks followed by shodan, nidan, sandan, etc. after ikkyu.
		Kyu-ranked practitioners wear white belts through yonkyu, brown from sankyu to ikkyu, then fl from shodan.
