Shinkansen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Shinkansen" name was first formally used in 1940 for a proposed standard gauge passenger/freight line between Tokyo and Shimonoseki, using steam and electric locomotives with a top speed of 200 km/h (twice the speed of the fastest Japanese train at the time).
The first Shinkansen trains ran at speeds of up to 200 km/h (125 mph), later increased to 220 km/h (135 mph); some of these trains, with their classic bullet-nosed appearance, are still in use.
Kyushu Shinkansen extension to Hakata is under construction and will open by 2010.

 Shinkansen
In contrast to the existing lines, the Shinkansen lines are standard gauge, and use tunnels and viaducts to go through and over obstacles, rather than around them.
Shinkansen trains now run regularly at speeds of up to 300 kph, putting them among the fastest trains running in the world, along with the French TGV and German ICE trains.
The prefix is used to distinguish the railway station serving Shinkansen trains in towns where it is in a different location to the regular station, as in Shin-Osaka station.

The Shinkansen are run by the many companies of Japan Railway (which in the past was called Japanese National Railways, but now is one group of private companies).
In contrast to the older lines, Shinkansen lines are standard gauge, and use tunnels and viaducts to go through and over obstacles, rather than around them.
Most Shinkansen lines that were proposed during the boom of the early 1970s have been postponed indefinitely.

With the first stage of the Kyushu Shinkansen due to open next year, it will be interesting to see if JR Kyushu is able to mix style and speed; from the information I've seen so far, it looks like they may well succeed.
With the new 800-series Shinkansen, JR Kyushu have created a train that I'm sure is unmatched anywhere in Japan for sheer style.
When I travel by Shinkansen, I've always got the feeling that speed is first and foremost, with the enjoyment of the journey a distant second, but with the Tsubame, there seems to be at least an equal emphasis on making the journey itself a memorable experience.

I first travelled on the Tsubame in 1994, the first time I came to Japan, and again when I had to attend a conference in Kagoshima a few years ago, and the journey on both occasions was memorable.
The Shinkansen trains, while much faster than even the limited expresses, always seem vaguely utilitarian in terms of their interiors: they might get you from A to B swiftly and in more than adequate comfort, but there's nothing particularly memorable about the train journey itself, really, apart from the speed.
The limited expresses, though, especially in Kyushu, have real character, and travelling on them is a pleasure, an integral part of the enjoyment of the journey.

Shinkansen is famous for its high speed; actually it is not only fast, but very convenient and efficient.
Its scenery may be rather dull because everytime Shinkansen line comes to mountainous areas or even small hills, it goes straight into a long long tunnel to avoid curving, which is the obstacle to its high speed.
You may often have to change Shinkansen to a limited express at the junction if you extend your journey off the beaten track, although schedule is generally well organized and you have only to wait for several minutes at the connections.
