The band was originally formed in 1989 under the name Sons of Kyuss until the release of their first album, when the band released the rare self-titled EP Sons of Kyuss, still with Chris Cockrell on bass locally in 1990.
The name Sons of Kyuss was taken from the roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons, and shortened to "Kyuss" with a slightly different lineup later in that year.
Kyuss were fortunate that friends Nirvana and especially fan and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl were keen to see them achieve success, and managed to get them a spot on tour with Metallica in Australia in 1993.

One of the guys who I recently met to play music with was one of the Kyuss freaks that I have come across who actually enjoyed their performance.
John would get up in front of the band and his bellows would fill the amphitheatre mixing perfectly with the groove of the song and when his part was done he would go off to the side of the stage and mellow to the music which they all enjoyed to their fullest.
Another person that I currently work with went to the concert with no inclination of what the band Kyuss was like and the fact that the volume was so muted really reduced the impact of the dynamics present in their music on him.

As a Kyuss devotee, it's hard to find fault with this album beyond its being too short.You're [drawn] in early by a fine representation of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void", which is half a joke for any Kyuss follower from the band itself.

There is a lot of debate among Kyuss fans as to which of their albums is the best, I personally love them all and find it hard to compare any of them.
KYUSS, like The Stooges, will be recognized as a truly great band 20 years from now, when it's too late.
Kyuss are the seminal band in desert/stoner rock, and this album proves exactly that.

Before Kyuss, there were bands that turned in albums that were ten times as heavy, aggressive, brutal, but none ever sounded as if Godzilla had been awoken in the Californian desert.
Many people consider this the ultimate Kyuss album (and by consequence also the quintessential stoner rock album) and there are certainly arguments to support that vision.
Though mainstream recognition eluded them at the time, Kyuss is nowadays considered to be one of the most influential bands of the 90's and one of the true forefathers of all things stoner and related.

You see heavy Kyuss, experimental Kyuss, mellow Kyuss and just plain Kyuss Kyuss, doing what they do best, all on one album that refuses to be classified as an album with a specific vibe.
Kyuss unknowingly started this stupid label "stoner rock", and to this day no one has come close to there originality in songwriting or vocals or presence.....Its a damn shame people end up liking the expected heavy rotation of monotony thats shoveled down our throats.
Kyuss ends their trio of songs with "Fatso Forgotso Part II" which I the shortest song on the album but arguably one of the best.

Kyuss is a band that's hard to pigeon hole into one musical category.
While showing strong heavy metal roots, Kyuss lacks the screaming lead guitars that are standard equipment for most metal acts.
Kyuss broke up sometime back in October 1995 and despite numerous rumors of them reforming with different members, the sad fact is that they are no longer with us.
