 Governor's Administration - Kyustendil
Following the restoration of the independent Bulgarian state, Kyustendil Region became the arena of major migration processes that significantly influenced the urban and rural development in the region.
In the period 1944-1980, Kyustendil region developed a predominantly industrial structure, whereas the industrial-to-agriculture output ratio was estimated at 86:14.
Kyustendil Region is one of the last fiefdoms of the Medieval Bulgarian Kingdom to fall under the Turkish conquest.

(Men or widows were classified as the heads of households and paid taxes on behalf of the family.) Records from the province of Rumelia, under the leadership of Mehmet II Fatih, in 1475 detailed laws and regulations concerning gypsies.
The exception to this statement is in the Danube provinces of Moldavia and Wallachia where gypsies were enslaved because of their superior craftsworking skills.
Though they had been reported to have been in Wallachia since the eleventh century by Mircea the Great and had purportedly been in Moldavia since the twelfth century, we see the mass migration of gypsies connected to the widespread practice of donating people and land to monasteries.

The region that is now Bulgaria was at one time included in the Roman Empire as part of the provinces of Thrace and Moesia.
The Thracians were eventually expelled or absorbed by Greek, Persian, and Roman colonies, but traces of their culture remain in their monuments devoted to horse worship and in the mummer (Bulgarian: kuker) tradition that still survives in southwestern Bulgaria.
In Roman times Bulgaria was divided between the provinces of Moesia (to the north of the Balkan Mountains) and Thrace (to the south of the Balkans) and was crossed by the main land route from the west to the Middle East.

In other news, the UN civilian administration in Kosova (UNMIK) announced on 7 March that a council has been established to coordinate the gradual transfer of "substantial responsibilities from [UNMIK] to the Institutions of Provisional Self-Government." The events honored then-deputy parliamentary speaker Dimitar Peshev, who was a citizen of Kyustendil; Plovdiv's Orthodox Christian Patriarch Kiril; and Sofia's Orthodox Exarch Stefan, who initiated successful protests against the deportation of Bulgarian Jews to Nazi death camps in Poland.
