The Caspian Kara Kum ("Black Sand"), the larger desert at over 300,000 km², is east of the Caspian Sea, with the Aral Sea to the north and the Amu Daryariver and Kyzyl-Kum desert to the northeast and covers 90 per cent of Turkmenistan.
It is crossed by the Trans-Caspian railway and the largest irrigation canal in the world, the Kara-Kum Canal at 1375 km in length.

My goal was to produce a desert-like landscape as I've seen in Central Asia this year, like the Kara Kumdesert in Turkmenistan or the KyzylKum in Uzbekistan.
What's very evidently missing (if you've been there) is the thin scrub and grass that actually covers much of those deserts, and where herders graze their sheep and goats, and camels roam.
KyzylKum means "red desert" for the reddish tinge to its sands, so that's what these images shall be called.

The Oasis of the KyzylKumdesert, known from 3rd century B.C. Bukhara had several names by the different epochs: Numiskat, Madaniyat, Fakhira, Vikhara.
It was one of the great trading centres on the Great Silk Road, an independent Emirate and scene of Anglo Russian rivalry in the "Great Game" of the 19th century, surrounded by the sands of the KyzylKumdesert, Bukhara still retains the atmosphere of an ancient Great Silk Road city.
A short drive outside Bukhara is Sitora-I-Mohihosa, 19th century summer palace of the last Emir with its gaudy mix of eastern and western decoration.

Over 18,000 joint orientations were measured from a spectrum of lithologies of various ages at natural exposures in the Central KyzylKum region.
Our previous attempt to reconstruct paleostresses in the study region from joints in sedimentary rocks yielded results closely similar to fold trend data.
