Kzinti evolved from a plains hunting cat, stole their current space-faring technology, and bred (most of) their own females into sub-sapience.
The first indication the kzinti Patriarchy had that much of the kzin empire was gone and that a significant percentage of all kzinti had died was when human warships appeared in the skies above their homeworld.
Kzinti are thought to have influenced the creation of the similarly Felinoid Kilrathi, the primary antagonists of the popular Wing Commander video game series of early-to-mid-nineties.

What I then propose is that the Kzinti "Wars" (which are likely considered wars mainly by the Kzinti) were fought between 2161 and 2264; during the first wave of expansion after the establishment of the Federation, Federation ships ran into the Kzinti in a star cluster near the area of colonization.
Kzinti and Klingons probably get along pretty well now; two warrior races in a galaxy where warrior races are vanishing...their cultures likely much more similar than they are different.

Anyway, I really liked the character Grass Eater, because it shows a whole new side of the Kzinti, and gives insight into who they really are.
You see that even the mightiest warriors among them are not fearless, but are basically brutalized from birth into constant fights for survival that is the basis for their entire society.
Ironically, Niven goes far out of his way in the introduction to Man-Kzin Wars IV to criticize a parody of his work and claim ownership of "his" fictional universe.

From what I understand, this is how the the Kzinti Gravity Drive (KGD) works: There is a supply of "monopoles" (remembering names from memory so please forgive me) aboard the ship which can be projected in any direction outside of the ship.
I do not remember off hand in which book it is described (it's one of the early ones), but it takes Larry Niven's original very brief description of gravity polarizer and expands on it.
I was trying to explain this as the Kzinti using some sort of projector to project a magnetic field in front of the ship which pulls it..
