L'Osservatore Romano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first issue of L'Osservatore Romano was published in Rome on 1 July 1861, a few months after the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed on (17 March 1861).
The daily Italian edition of L'Osservatore Romano is published in the afternoon, with a cover date of the following day.
Its motto is "unicuique suum" - "to each his own" and "non praevalebunt" - (the enemies of God, of the Church) "shall not prevail" and is printed under the masthead.

 L'Osservatore Romano
The original idea for weekly editions of L'Osservatore Romano in languages other than Italian goes back to Pope Pius X11, who reasoned that, if the Successor of Peter was going; to have a newspaper to publicize his teaching, it should reach as many people as possible.
Although the Acta Apsotolicae Sedis is the Holy See's only official publication in the strict sense of the term, L'Osservatore Romano remains the most authoritative vehicle for communicating the Holy Father's message on a daily and weekly basis.
John Muthig in January 1991, the Secretariat of State turned to a priest who had spent the last four critical years of his formation at the College, if we consider the nature of L'Osservatore Romano and the kind of priestly training NAC has always provided for its seminarians.

But “LOsservatore Romano” went a step further, becoming a self-appointed standard-bearer of extreme pacifism, screaming this attitude even graphically, with front pages laid out to look like placards, which were even carried in demonstrations as posters.
In actual fact, “LOsservatore Romano” itself admitted two days later that no priest had been killed and that the nuns of Saint Brigit had escaped the danger.
In the course of four days, “LOsservatore Romano” dedicated no less than seven pages of reporting and triumphant photos to the event.

Letter of November 11, 2002 to Pope John Paul II
On September 13, 2001 L'Osservatore Romano published a "Declaration" concerning me, signed by Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos and his Secretary, Archbishop Csaba Ternyak, and dated September 12, 2001.
Not one of these criminals has been made the subject of a "declaration" in LOsservatore Romano.
This injustice is all the more scandalous in view of the daily revelations of unspeakable sexual crimes by priests and even bishops throughout the Church, whose crimes were covered up for decades.

The writer raises questions about some opinions expressed by Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone, secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in an article that originally appeared in the December 20, 1996 edition of L'Osservatore Romano.
In such a case, it would be wise to put off any peremptory declaration until it becomes clear whether a question has been raised that obliges the Church to look at an old problem in a new light and perhaps come up with a better answer to it.
He focuses on Bertone's views on the doctrinal weight that should be attributed to a papal declaration that a particular doctrine has been taught infallibly by the ordinary universal magisterium.

So the CWN story of December 28 had L`Osservatore Romano criticizing Israel editorially for refusing to deliver aid through non-military personnel.
However, after CWN carried its "correction," citing the claim of a "mistranslation," the ADL apologized to L`Osservatore Romano in a letter to its editor-in-chief:
The Vatican paper observed that in what "should be a time for unconditional solidarity," some world leaders seem incapable of escaping a "small-minded approach that restricts their horizons." The suffering caused by the tsunami has created "a mass of deaths, across borders," L`Osservatore observed.

After the postponement of the plenary session became known in May of last year, the Holy Father wrote a Letter to Cardinal Edward I. Cassidy as President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, saying that not only should the dialogue not be interrupted, but it must continue with renewed intensity.
This Letter shows the Holy Father's pastoral interest in the theological dialogue, and at the same time is meant to recall the need for perseverance in the work for unity.
Their unanimous participation in the opening of the Holy Door, a symbol of Jesus Christ, the one true door to salvation, expressed our common faith in our Lord and Saviour and our common will to proclaim him to the new generations of the third millennium.

The official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano singled out Israeli leaders for declining the country's request for emergency help, when in fact the Israeli government's offer to provide a team of medical and security personnel was initially rejected by the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry.

In its Oct. 13 edition, L'Osservatore Romano focused in particular on the novel "The Pianist," which was made into a film.

The newspaper criticized Jelinek's works because "her topics are quickly channeled into descriptions of the feminine world, between scenes of crude sexuality, which are not conducive to an understanding of the emancipation of woman." The aim of L'Osservatore Romano is to present the teaching of the Pope and the Church and to publish acts and documents of the Holy Father and the Holy See.
Called "Il Costituzionale Romano," it was shut down in 1849, but re-opened later that year with the name L'Osservatore Romano (The Roman Observer).
The predecessor of this paper was a privately-printed, but officially approved, triweekly Catholic publication born in 1848 as the desire of Catholics living in the Papal States.

 Bettnet.com - Comments
Over the summer an item appeared on “Off the record” that slammed the Osservatore Romano for being selective in its outrage in condemning the murder of a Korean hostage in Iraq but keeping silent about the murder of an American hostage.
Still, I find it striking that after raising the possibility that the error could have been caused by incompetence-- which, I’m afraid, is the truth-- Elizabeth Behrman goes on to offer another completely speculative theory, and proceeds on the assumption that it is true.
However, I do think she grievously errs in not also asking why it is that so many were, to recast her op-ed title, rushing to hate the Pope.

Yesterday, L'Osservatore Romano paid moving homage to "Peanuts" author Charles M. Schulz, who died on Sunday.
He was an innovator who had two merits: he made the comic popular, allowing everyone -- from the common people to professors, to realize the communicative possibilities of this language and he ennobled it, elevating it to the level of art and of expression of thought," Domenico Volpi states in his article.
For two years in a row the Catholic Press Association gave Envoy its coveted magazine of the year "General Excellence" award for a magazine, as well as a slew of other first-place rewards for its editing, articles, stories, designs and artwork.
