Story arc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One area of American television where story arcs have always thrived, however, is in the realm of the soap opera, and often episodic series have been derisively referred to as "soap operas" when they have adopted story arcs.
Story arcs in contemporary drama (whatever the medium) often (but not always) follow the pattern of bringing a character to a low point, removing the structures the character depends on, then forcing the character to find new strength without those structures.
Episodes not relevant to story arcs are sometimes dismissed as filler by fans, but might be referred to as self-contained or standalone episodes by producers.

Short story - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Short stories have their origins in the prose anecdote, a swiftly-sketched situation that comes rapidly to its point, with parallels in oral story-telling traditions.
Both of these books are composed of individual short stories (which range from farce or humorous anecdotes to well-crafted literary fictions) set within a larger narrative story (a frame story), although the frame tale device was not adopted by all writers.
Determining what exactly separates a short story from longer fictional formats is problematic.

Frame story - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A frame story (also frame tale, frame narrative, etc.) is a narrative technique whereby a main story is composed, at least in part, for the purpose of organizing a set of shorter stories, each of which is a story within a story.
Sometimes a story within the main narrative can be used to sum up or encapsulate some aspect of the framing story, in which case it is referred to in literary criticism by the French term mise en abyme.
An early example of the frame story is The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, in which the character Shahrazad narrates a set of fairy tales to the King Shahriyar over many nights.
