LA Observed: Big turmoil at the Weekly *
I'd count most Weekly staffers among the group that feels her political views — conservative-leaning Democrat who dislikes most Democrats — and talk radio-style hype trump reporting.
In addition to writing at New Times L.A. when it tried but failed to take on the Weekly, Stewart is a former L.A. Times staff writer and Buzz magazine columnist who more recently worked as an editor for Pajamas Media and at the Daily News.
Her claims that the L.A. Times groping stories about Schwarzenegger during the 2003 recall campaign were timed for political reasons, and that Gray Davis was protected by the paper, brought angry denunciations from LAT editor John Carroll, who accused her of fabricating her stories to become famous.

End of an Era at the 'LA Weekly'
The changes at the LA Weekly in the past six months have been dramatic: virtually no more writing about the war in Iraq or other international or national news topics, no more endorsements of candidates in elections and no more stories about the forces trying to make LA a more egalitarian and less polarized city.
There was a time when the alt weeklies sent writers around the world: When Weekly staff writer Marc Cooper was at the Voice in the 1980s and '90s, it sent him to cover the Sandinistas' Nicaragua, the invasion of Panama, the first Gulf War and Yeltsin's Russia.
The Weekly's endorsements expressed the editors' belief that the paper was an important political and journalistic institution with a responsibility to readers and to the broader community interest.

Regarding David Zahniser's LA Weekly story on covering up the death of labor leader Miguel Contreras, Harold Meyerson's reaction to the piece and news editor Alan Mittelstaedt's response to Meyerson...
The "Dave" Harold refers to in the letter to the LA Weekly staff is David Zahniser, the reporter who in the past has written some good stories but who has jumped into the gutter with this one.
When we organized the Progressive LA conference at Occidental College in October 1998, the Weekly was one of its cosponsors, featured it on its cover, and published several stories in the September 30, 1998 issue about the past, current, and future of progressive politics in LA: link and link.

LA Weekly publisher finds good not enough in post - Media & Technology - president and publisher Michael Sigman let go ...
By all accounts, LA Weekly President and Publisher Michael Sigman did an admirable job steering the alternative paper through a recession that has killed or severely ravaged many other publications.
He judiciously trimmed expenses, sparing all but a couple of part-timers from layoffs, bolstered the classified ad staff to boost revenues, and managed to keep 2001 ad revenues equal to those of 2000, a feat few publishers were able to pull off.
While conceding that the LA Weekly is one of VVM's top-performing papers, Schneider-man said he wants to replace Sigman with someone who has a strong background in sales and marketing and "pushes the growth."

A little frustrated that my queries to LA Weekly's "feedback" have been ignored, I gave the local rag a phone call to find out why they're no longer publishing the crossword puzzle.
Perhaps ironic is the Weekly's recent positive review of the documentary, Wordplay, plus their acceptance of both online and print ad space of the same film.
I, and many other crossword loving LA Weekly fans, are devastated that you've just scrapped the print crossword puzzle.

LA Weekly: Features Feature: The Noise of Art
THE IDEA THAT ARTISTS ARE CAPABLE of producing organized sound that is somehow distinct from that created by musicians and composers has existed ever since the publication of Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo's manifesto "The Art of Noises" in 1913.
Unsurprisingly, Singer has included major figures like vocalist/performance artist Meredith Monk and turntable-collage pioneer Christian Marclay, but has also come up with a few surprises, including former L.A. Weekly staffer Marina Rosenfeld, whose Glenn Brancastyle electric-guitar massings are given a conspicuous feminist twist through the use of nail-polish bottles as bottleneck slides.
Other L.A. artists with sound practices participating in the Biennial include the Mike Kelley/Jim Shaw Destroy All Monsters Collective (showing a mass of their punk-psychedelic band ephemera) and gizmo artiste extraordinaire Tim Hawkinson.

LA Weekly - Palladium Review 11 August 2002
At the risk of giving in to silly clichés about a macabre madwoman, one can easily forgive such things as lousy acoustics after finally putting a voice to the face -- ruby red lips, kabuki pallor, flened raccoon eyes -- that's become so iconic of a genre and generation.
Black-suited (later stripping down to a spangly bra) and mulleted à la Aladdin Sane, she thumped her chest, twirled her hands in flamenco-style passion, and rolled around the Palladium stage like toilet paper, as her drummer/husband Budgie, in a perfect display of one-upmanship, banged in holy terror.
