L5 Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
L4 and L5 are points of stable gravitational equilibrium located on the Moon's orbit at equal distances from both the Earth and the Moon.
L5 News was the newsletter of the L5 Society reporting on space habitat development and related space issues.
The L5 News was published from September 1975 until April 1987, when the merger with the National Space Institute was completed and the newly formed National Space Society began publication of its own magazine, Ad Astra.

L4 and L5 are "gravity wells" just as the Earth and Moon are: Leaving requires climbing out of the well (a "hole in space") we find ourselves in.
Working from L5, asteroid mining and tapping the resources of the gas giants could be economically feasible: It would almost be possible using the rockets we have available now.
The satellites are used for studying the Solar wind beyond the influence of the Earth's magnetic field, and spend most of their fuel maintaining their position against the flow of the wind: They are "at the top of the hill" and the Solar wind is constantly trying to blow them down...

`L5' Is Barely Habitable / Characters fall flat in IMAX space story
``L5'' has cool computer-generated imagery and boasts actual 3-D footage of Jupiter from the space probe Voyager, but the story is thin and the characters wooden.
``L5'' is narrated by a woman named Chieko, one of the first residents of the suspended city, population 10,000, that serves as a port to other destinations in the solar system.
The early scenes of ``L5'' are the best, when Chieko talks about fertilizing hydroponic food crops with moon soil, about the asteroid that was caught and mined for its minerals and fuels, about ``the world of perfect harmony and balance'' that she knew as a child.

L5 Society was planning to build within twenty years if they could obtain private funding.
The concept is based on the Lagrangian libration points that exist in five locations between the earth and the moon orbits, where gravity is neutral due to the countering effects of the gravitational fields. If an object was to be placed in one of these points it wouldn't move in relation to the earth.

Again, however, L4 and L5 are so distant that for a realistic calculation of the motion of a spacecraft near them, the pull of other planets must be included.
By contrast, the equilibrium at L4 or L5 are like that of a marble at the bottom of a spherical bowl: given a slight push, it rolls back again.
If we had not assumed the triangle ABC to be equilateral and the distances (a,b,c) to be equal, we would have obtained a relation different from the law of sines, one which did not hold, and therefore all equations required for equilibrium at point C could not be satisfied.
