L7 was set to record their self titled debut album produced by Brett Gurewitz, the first album to be released on the label, which was distributed thru Chameleon in 1988.
With their legions of fans now growing worldwide, L 7 entered the studio with producer "GGGarth Richardson." to begin work on their 4th album "Hungry For Stink" released on July 12, 1994, this would unfortunately also be the last studio album with L 7 that "Jennifer Finch" would appear on.
While the album was well received by the bands faithful, it wasn't as widely appreciated as "Bricks Are Heavy." All though the "NYC's Village Voice" praised the album, as well as the band's "...sense of adventure coupled with a sense of humor...

The seeds for L7 (whose name was taken from a slang term in the '50s that meant someone who was a "square") were planted in 1985, when a pair of guitarists/singers, Suzi Gardner and Donita Sparks, decided to start a band.
L7 issued Smell the Magic for the Sub Pop label in 1991, and the same year formed the Rock for Choice non-profit organization.
With Nirvana finally bringing punk to the mainstream, bands such as L7 suddenly became "en vogue" as the quartet was signed to Slash/Reprise, issuing their best-known album with the Butch Vig-produced Bricks Are Heavy in April of 1992 (which spawned the popular MTV hit "Pretend We're Dead").

In the UK, the band are most famous/notorious for an appearance on the popular late-night entertainment programme The Word, in which Sparks pulled her pants down to reveal her pubic area.
The band made an appearance in the 1994 John Waters film Serial Mom under the name "Camel Lips", a reference to the visual imprint of a woman's vulva in the crotch of too-tight jeans.

L7 had the sound, style, and tough-grrrl attitude to hit it big in the aftermath of grunge's mainstream breakthrough, but unfortunately, the band was too often hampered by uneven songwriting.
Though they hailed from sunny L.A., L7 became the poster girls for grunge, and more specifically the "riot grrrl" movement in 1992, with the meteoric success of their third album, Bricks Are Heavy.
The band deserves ultimate praise for writing from a completely female perspective at all times, and the fabulous "Fast and Frightening" just might be the ultimate "riot grrrrl" anthem.

I dont think there is another band in the world that has had the comic sense of L7, which includes their musical talents and playing off of musical cliches: take the BTO "Takin Care of Business" musical pun from "Masses are Asses"..."the masses are asses, everyday.
Since the band was on their own dollar, the album was recorded in their rehearsal space using first or second takes, which gives the album a raw, spontaneous feel like their early masterpiece SMELL THE MAGIC but the sound here is completely flat and lacks the crunch that the band was so famous for.
A year later, L7 were recording their next album when singer/guitarist Suzi Gardner, tired of years of life on the road, decided to leave the band, ending their 15-year run.

I drove in well after the opening band was playing, got a gated parking spot close to the door, bought my ticket without waiting in line, and walked up to the barricade--front and center.
This setup works well for a solo artist or a sparsely set play; however, the three bands’ stacks of amps meant the stage couldn’t rotate and half the auditorium was blocked off, which cut the capacity to 1300.
The second band was L7, of whom I’m not a fan.

Since the band was using bootleg tapes, there's no overdubbing or removing any mistakes, such as the out-of-tune guitar parts on "Bitter Wine", which makes this one of the most genuine and realistic live albums ever released.

I was a huge L7 fan back in the day, but even I took this album and sold it to a used CD store within weeks of buying it.
I felt that L7 was vastly superior to Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
The self-titled debut album by L7 may not be their best work but I have heard much worse music by other artists/bands than this album.
